Why You Should Travel More in the UK

When most of us think of travelling, we all imagine sunny places far away from home where we can almost escape reality.

However, what we don’t realize is that there are so many amazing places on our own doorstep that we can visit to equally escape reality, have a great time, and save money without the added stress of travelling to the other side of the world, and they have sunshine too. In fact, I am always surprised when British people travel to Florida in the summer months because Floridians will do anything to escape the morbidly hot temperatures and humidity at that time of year.

You aren’t guaranteed sunshine during summer months in Florida. In fact, I can almost bet my savings that you will experience thunder and lightning storms (perhaps a tornado, or at least a tornado warning) if you go to Florida in August. And if it is a really ‘special’ trip, you could endure a hurricane or have your travel cut short due to a prediction of one. That is why I am staying in the UK for this summer. It is just so much more pleasant here than in my home state.

Staying in the UK instead of travelling far away for the prospect of sunshine can actually be amazing. Since passing my Life in the UK test in February, I have had an even stronger appreciation for all the things there are too do within the UK. For all these reasons, I decided to share this article with you on Sunny in London. It is devoted to giving you some of the reasons why you should spend more time travelling in the UK.

Diverse Landscapes:

The UK might be a small nation, but it has very diverse landscapes. From south to north, whether it is the Scottish Highlands or the White Cliffs of Dover, there is really so much nature, so much diverse landscape within this country that we have all probably not even seen a fraction of. Taking the time to get out and explore what is already on our doorstep, would give you a much deeper appreciation for the UK. There are millions of tourists attracted to the country each year. It is for good reason.

Recently my mother visited for two weeks. Our goal was to include travel outside of London and explore more of what the UK has to offer. We visited York, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Stonehenge, and Bath. My mother had hoped to get to the Scottish Highlands. She also had the hopes of seeing cliffs and a rugged coastline. Further, after seeing all of my pictures of my holiday in Cornwall last year, she wanted to go there too. Cornwall’s great cliffs and sea views would deserve more than a day’s stay.

I have Cornwall, the Lake District, Canterbury and Leeds Castle on her list for another trip as well. We decided we should probably plan for a full week or more in Scotland next time. What do you think, Sunny friends? Oh- and then of course there is Snowdonia to visit too!

Stunning Nature

The UK boasts some of the greenest areas in Europe, if not the whole world, and places like Loch Lomond or Inverness, or even places in the South of England are just simply stunning and offer so much to nature lovers, so whether you love hiking or just strolling through some fields and taking in the vast beauty around you, then you are really going to appreciate the nature that the UK has to offer, and develop again a deeper appreciation for the country.

Easy to Get Around

Although the UK is small, it is not as tiny as some people do believe. However, due to the fact that the country is an island, it is easy to get around. Transport systems provide great connections all over the country, whether it is through airports, trains or buses.  There are great connections all over the place that you can use to get around from cities and towns quickly and easily. My blog and YouTube channel feature tons of advice articles and videos about these.

So even if you’re coming from the very southern point of England and are looking to visit Scotland, then there are plenty of ways that you can do this. You can also drive within a reasonably short period of time through the good motorways in the country.  Or, you can fly within 45 minutes and be in Scotland. My mother and I took the train to York and then to Scotland. We were in both places within a few hours without much hassle. In Scotland we were exposed to a completely different landscape. Both of us had the feeling of being able to escape reality and got the downtime that we needed without even having to have the stress that normally accompanies long-haul travel.

Rich in History and Culture

Compared to America, the UK is obviously a much older country. It benefits from some of the richest history and culture in all of Europe – whether you want to spend a day in London visiting places like Buckingham Palace or you want to explore Edinburgh Castle, or even visit less touristy parts of Yorkshire or Scotland and experience some of the regional history they offer, you are always going to find something that is truly amazing and interesting that you may never have known was there unless you took the time to get out and actually look for it.

Activities for Every Budget

One of the great things about the UK is that it does have a rather good economy. However, this does not mean that everything is ‘over the top expensive’.  Many families live here quite comfortably, so it is also well known that things need to be affordable and accessible. This means that no matter what kind of budget you have, you are always going to be able to find something that will suit your budget so that you can do things with your family and have fun that everyone will enjoy.

You can do things like visit places like Edinburgh Castle, the London Dungeon, or even just stroll through places like Glasgow Green and have a picnic and watch a show together.

Another way to save some money on activities for the family is to use sites like Groupon and LivingSocial where you will find lots of great deals on things like restaurants, shows at the west end and just days out for the whole family. You can even find hotels and other overnight stays that come down as much as 80% off the advertised retail price, so it is worth investigating these if you are looking to save money on your budget for your trip!

I hope that this post has helped you see that there are many great reasons to explore parts of the UK, and that it doesn’t really take a lot of money. The trip to York and Edinburgh I coordinated for my mother and I was quite easy. Equally, the trip Mr Sunny and I planned to the Cotswolds last year and Cornwall were hassle free.

Whether you are looking for something in a rural area where you can enjoy nature, you are looking for a city break, or even looking for something like a family campsite where you can have things like entertainment and enjoy a break together whilst also being able to spend some time independently, then the UK really has so many different options. If  the weather is good  – especially during the summer months, then you can almost feel like you are in a different country completely and without having to endure things like long airport security lines, being crammed in a tiny plane seat for hours and applying for things like visas or having to worry about currency conversions.

Whilst travelling outside the UK is definitely amazing and is something that we should be doing whenever we can, there is certainly nothing wrong with staying at home sometimes to explore the beautiful country available so easily.

Hopefully this has inspired you a little to at least investigate some of the options available to you when looking at places in the UK that you can visit and why it is such a popular destination for tourists and travellers from all over the world.

  1. Yap so agree with this. Have been doing mostly staycations. Last trip was to Bristol on a weekend. Next is actually to Belgium but really looking forward to go back to Scotland. In 8 years have been 4 times alone to lake district. 4 times to Wales. Cornwall, Norwich, Yorkshire, Manchester a few times too, Birmingham to meet up with friends, Lemington Spa, Warwick, loads of times to Bristol, 4 times to Bath, as many times to Brighton (maybe more) and all the areas in that area. So yeah when we can we really explore around. The beauty is you can do it more often (missed Summerseat and the Cotswolds as well as cities like Oxford and Cambridge which I really love)

    1. Wow! These sound like fantastic trips! Thank you for taking the time to comment. I would love some suggestions for the Lake District and Wales, since I haven’t been to either. Any activities, hotels or restaurants you recommend?
