Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea

Just how delicious is the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea at One Aldwych Hotel in London?

Well… Hold your breath. Make a wish. Count to three… Come with me… and you’ll be in a world of imagination.

When I walked in to One Aldwych Hotel, I had no idea what to expect. I have seen both Chocolate Factory movies years ago. However, I didn’t realise how popular Roald Doahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is in England, until I moved here last year. In America, the films Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory are cult classics, but they don’t really receive much more attention than that.

Mr. Sunny, however, spent many childhood Christmas days watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. I hear it’s a traditional Christmas Day movie for kids to watch in the UK.

Sadly, Mr. Sunny had to work the day of my afternoon tea, so I invited my mother in law to join me.

Prior to going, I asked Mr. Sunny to tell me about his favourite scene. His response, ‘When that gum chewing American girl eats too much, turns blue and rolls away.’ Hmmmm.

I made sure to leave my gum at home the day I took my golden ticket to my London chocolate factory.

My mother in law and I began the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea with very adult drinks. She chose the glass of Lallier Grand Reserve Champagne. I was eager to have the Charlie Cocktail.Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea One Aldych Hotel Charlie Cocktail

This berry fun drink whisked in front of me like a smoking cauldron of temptation. Just how I would imagine it would be served in a magical chocolate factory.

We giggled at our ‘Fizzy Lifting Drinks’ in our imaginary Bubble Room. The actual setting of this spectacular event is the One Aldwych Hotel Lobby Bar. It’s airy, modern and colorful.

Each menu creatively has a sketch of one set of characters that take the Golden Ticket journey to the chocolate factory.

I investigated every corner, but I couldn’t find a chocolate river. That was a bit disappointing. I wanted to give the wallpaper a little lick, but I figured that might embarass my mother in law just a bit 😉 And, no, I didn’t see any giant edible mushrooms during my visit either.

However, as we sat sipping, we curiously watched the food delivery of the special themed afternoon tea as it was served to other tables. We also had a bit of tea that was absolutely extraordinary. We highly recommend the Smooth Caramel and Queen of Berries. Both are by the Tea Palace in Covent Garden.

Soon, our Sandwiches and Savoury courses arrived, and we were delighted. My mother-in-law picked food from the original menu.

The afternoon tea sandwiches include: smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise and roast beef. I was especially jealous of her leek and stilton quiche. I ordered the gluten free afternoon tea, so my food was a bit different.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea One Aldwych Hotel London

The sandwiches are the same, yet made with gluten free bread. Up on the left you can see a very yummy beet and goat cheese replacement for the leek and stilton quiche. We both absolutely loved the tomato tart. It is warm and gently explodes beautiful tomato love when you pop it in your mouth.

I have to give the One Aldwych Hotel a special recognition here. They had no idea I was going to order a gluten free afternoon tea and quickly created one for me. Although they accomodated me so easily, I suggest that if you have any special dietary needs, it would be helpful to request them when booking your table.

Gluten free sandwiches never really taste the same as regular bread. However, I can’t imagine these sandwiches being any better.

Next, our scones and sweets selections arrived.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea One Aldwych Hotel LondonSunny friends, this is really a spectacular sugar event, as it should be. If you’ve always wanted to unleash your inner Veruca Salt and have your very own golden goose egg without the fear of falling down a shoot afterwards, this Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea is for you!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea One Aldwych Hotel London

The golden chocolate egg filled with vanilla cheesecake and mango is a cream lovers dream! It has heavenly splashes of mango that fade in to the vanilla and chocolate flavour ever so delicately.

And how can you go wrong with lime, coconut and white chocolate pops? Wow!

Oh, and check it this little Eton Mess that surprises you under the candy floss trees…

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea One Aldwych Hotel London

We felt as if we were challenged with everlasting gobstoppers. We tried so hard to finish every bite but it seemed humany impossible to do.

So what are my final thoughts about the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Afternoon Tea at One Aldwych Hotel? “Run, Sunny friends! And don’t stop until you get there!’

For details about this special themed afternoon tea, visit One Aldwych Hotel. It’s located on The Strand just on the edge of Covent Garden.

Many thanks to One Aldwych for the complimentary afternoon tea for the purpose of a review. In the spirit of the story’s end, I’m hoping that because I wrote an honest review, that I will be given my own chocolate factory… just like Charlie.

Christmas Afternoon Tea at Conrad London St James

With so many hotels and restaurants offering a Christmas afternoon tea in London, how can you possibly make a decision on where to go?

Last year, I was invited to and enjoyed so many that I even hit three afternoon teas in one week!

Needless to say, the Christmas season left me feeling a bit heavy but with a strong idea of what London has to offer when it comes to Christmas afternoon tea.

While you may think it’s a bit premature to announce this year’s stand out afternoon tea for the holiday season, I am going to do it- right now.

If you are looking for an afternoon tea during the holidays that captures the essence of the range of the culinary experience, you need to book a table for the Conrad London St James Snow Queen Afternoon Tea offered in Emmeline’s Lounge.

I had the opportunity to enjoy this Christmas afternoon tea at the press launch recently with blogger friends Aftab at Fresh and Fearless and Suze from Luxury Columnist.

Christmas Afternoon Tea Conrad London St James Review

Last year, you may remember the #LDNBLoggersTea hosted at Conrad London St James, which was a huge London blogger event. While at the Christmas afternoon tea preview, I spent some time speaking with Chef Zoe Wager, the Head Pastry Chef at the luxury hotel.

Conrad London St James Afternoon Tea

After seeing her exquisite work two years in a row, I feel confident in saying that she, Sunny friends, is the Queen of the Christmas Afternoon Tea in London.

Why?

She masterfully uses her culinary skills to not only create exquisite food combinations but also tell a story with her work.

When I interviewed her last year regarding how she approached the competitive Christmas afternoon tea offerings in London, she indicated she wanted the tea to represent the feeling of looking out a snow covered window.

Conrad London St James Afternoon TeaThis year, when Chef Zoe came to my table, I was honoured once again by her eagerness to talk. Immediately, I asked her about the noticeable difference in this year’s Christmas afternoon tea against last year’s- the colour. Knowing her depth of thought she puts in to this luxury hotel afternoon tea, I asked her to tell me this year’s story.

She immediately indicated that colour was a bit of her inspiration. Chef Zoe wants to avoid the cliche Christmas snowmen, reindeer and Santa Claus this year. Instead, she felt guided by the Snow Queen, an original fairy tale written by Hans Christian Anderson. This story centers on the struggle between good and evil.

To the novice eye, she may appear to have jumped on the Frozen marketing sleigh.

However, the Snow Queen story is about an evil troll who makes a magic mirror which distorts the appearance of everything it reflects. How? It magnifies the ugly and bad, rather than showing the good and beautiful aspects of people.

One might argue there’s a metaphoric connection with the mirror and the effects of too much champagne consumption. 😉

Conrad London St James Afternoon Tea

Rather than labour through the rest of the story details, I want to show how every bite of the Conrad London St James Snow Queen Afternoon Tea tells this story through food and ambiance.

While we were there, Emmeline’s Lounge was transformed in to a fairy tale atmosphere with a mystical indigo lighting.

Did this disturb our pictures?

Again, we were often served the story through reflections, showing how Chef Zoe breaks the Snow Queen’s magic mirror into icy blue sugar shards…

Three reasons why I am offering this afternoon tea giveaway:

1. Fortnum and Mason is one of the world’s finest department stores.

It was founded in 1707 and has a long-standing regal history. It has served royalty for more than three centuries. Her Majesty the Queen, the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duchess of Cambridge were all present to open the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon at Fortnum and Mason in 2012. For her grand visit, the Queen even matched her dress to the store’s signature blue colour with accents of gold.

Fortnum and Mason has supported British military since Napoleonic Wars. They send military parcels filled with British home comforts from their department store. For the Diamond Jubilee, they filled tins with tea and clotted cream and shipped them to 18,000 military members.

2. Zomato is a website that rocks for learning about what’s happening in the restaurant world.

It’s best described as ‘Facebook meets Urbanspoon’. If you haven’t visited and joined yet, take a peak at my profile. You can see a user’s Activity, read his/her Reviews, look at the user’s Network of followers and people he/she follows, and create Wishlists of places to eat.

Zomato makes it easy to network with foodies in London and around the world. Plus, they have organised events for those who are contributors and love food. Finally, as you can see, this is just one example of the gold star giveaways they do. This month they’re also including ones to The Gallery, The Fountain & St Pancras.

Who doesn’t looooove a food giveaway????

3. My experience at the Afternoon Tea at Fortnum and Mason.

Before agreeing to do this afternoon tea giveaway, I made sure to explore every bit of the experience, down to the final sugary crumb. If you’re curious just how amazingly British and delicious it is, make sure you read every morsel of my full review that I posted last week. Well, that’s if you can handle mouth-watering pictures of pastries and other afternoon tea delights. 😉

Also, you can visit Zomato for all the reviews of Fortnum and Mason’s afternoon tea in the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon.

Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea- Join Angie and Me!

What’s more British than the Fortnum and Mason afternoon tea? Not much, Sunny friends. Not much. And thanks to Zomato, I had the chance to enjoy it recently with one of my favourite British bloggers, Angie from Silverspoon London. But the best part is, I’ll be offering the opportunity to a lucky reader next week!Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

So, why is Fortnum and Mason such a cherished part of British culture?

Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea- History and Interesting Facts

-1707,  Royal footman William Fortnum set up shop in St. James’s with his landlord, Hugh Mason. Fortnum’s family came to London from Oxford as high-class builders in the wake of the Great Fire, helping to establish the St. James’s and Mayfair areas as the most fashionable in London.

-1744, When India was brought to the British empire, so was the introduction of the world’s finest teas. Around this time London was becoming the centre of the world for trade. Fortnum’s was a unique emporium for goods sold nowhere else.

-1773, The Boston Tea Party takes place in America, which brings international attention to the value of tea drinking. And, much to the pleasure of this American girl, is this statement about the Boston Tea Party on the Fortnum and Mason website:

‘It is not on record who supplied the tea, but it was probably not us: we have never charged extortionate prices and none of our teas do at all well with salt water. Since Independence, though, our American cousins have been among our most loyal customers.’

-1800’s, The shop helps the army march ‘on its stomach’ to victory over Napoleon. The brand becomes a household name and is featured in the works of Charles Dickens and Henry James. During the Crimean War, Queen Victoria sends an order to dispatch Fortnum’s beef tea to Miss Nightingale when she learns of scandal in England’s hospitals.

Fortnum and Mason is now the leader in tinned goods. American, Henry J Heinz, brings samples of baked beans to Fortnum. You guessed it… that’s how the Brits have baked beans!

– 1900’s, The Department store thrives. It supports employees and officers during both World Wars. The Fortnum clock, with bells from the same foundry as Big Ben, is added to the front of the store.Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

2011, The world’s largest Scotch egg is created in the Fortnum demonstration kitchen.

2012, HM Queen Elizabeth II visits the store to open the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon. Also attending are the Duchess of Cornwall and Duchess of Cambridge.

2013, Fortnum’s opens at St Pancras International Station.

That’s a pretty impressive timeline. Don’t you think? I condensed it quite a bit from their webpage. They’ve been in the tea business for over 300 years!

Needless to say, when I saw on the booking confirmation, ‘Dress Code: We kindly request that guests dress smartly’ I understood why. When one has the opportunity to attend such a prestigious engagement steeped in history, one should mind the dress code!

So, Angie and I showed up in our beautiful dresses ready for a luxurious Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea, fit for a Queen!Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

I selected the traditional afternoon tea.Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

Angie chose the Savoury tea.Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

Our sandwiches were the same. They included: Cucumber and Cream Cheese, Rare Roast Beef and Cafe de Paris Butter, Fortnum’s Smoked Salmon and Horseradish Cream, and Rare Breed Hen Egg and Mustard Cress.Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review Food

Next, we had our scones. My tea included a plain scone and a raisin scone. They were scrumptious and came with a separate tiered dish just for the clotted cream and Fortnum’s preserves.Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

Angie’s afternoon tea had a Lemon and Dill Scone with Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese. And it had a Pea and Mint Scone with Bayonne Ham.

Our top tiers were very, very different. Since I have a sweet tooth that has no shame, I finished every one of these delicate patisseries. And yes, those are gold flakes on the chocolate and a rose petal on the eclair.Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

Angie’s final level included Leek and Bacon Tart with Thyme, Oeufs Drumkilbo, and Chicken Liver and Foie Gras Shortbread.Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

To say everything was delicious is an understatement. After finishing every morsel on my plates, I couldn’t eat another bite. So, the biggest surprise for me was being able to take a piece of cake home! It’s always an extra sunny treat to leave with a sweet! I picked a slice of this beauty…Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea Review

Aside from the standard Fortnum and Mason Afternoon Tea menu, you can also order from their special menu. It includes Vegetarian, Vegan, Dairy Free, Diabetic and Gluten Intolerant. And fellas, if you’re interested in making your special lady feel like a Queen for the day, Fortnum’s features gift cards for afternoon tea that you can purchase on their website! I really enjoyed my afternoon with Angie and at Fortnum and Mason. My only complaint is that I found numerous people not dressed appropriately. It was disappointing to see so many people sitting for afternoon tea in jeans and trainers. Please, please, Sunny friends, if you are invited or decide to go to an event that so clearly requests smart dress, follow suit! It’s just the respectful thing to do.

LDNBloggersTea- A Sneaky Look Behind the Scenes!

It’s been about 10 days since our most recent LDNBloggersTea, and I think I’ve just finally recovered! If you’ve been reading all the blog posts about it, you know we had a really fabulous afternoon tea.

I think the best headline to capture our day is, “Chef Big Ben does it again!’

The bloggers who attended are doing such an amazing job of showing you all the fun you missed. I want to give you some insight on how it all came together.

#LDNBLoggersTea-London-bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

LDNBloggersTea- The Idea

Because #LDNBloggersTea has a massive social media reach, we had a few options for the venue location. But, Chef Ben made it difficult to refuse the Lancaster London due to his previous successful afternoon tea with our group. And, let’s be honest- he’s one heck of a social media star!

When I met with him to discuss possibilities, we created the ‘Afternoon Tea for a Cele-Brit-tea’ theme based on his Master Chef experience. He also has a strong interest in bringing more stars to Lancaster London hotel, where he’s the newly appointed Executive Chef.

I asked him to get a red carpet for our blogger stars and to hit up Laurent Perrier for a Step and Repeat. This seemed like a natural step to making bloggers feel like A-listers even before they walked through the afternoon tea room doors.

#LDNBLoggersTea-London-bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

Laurent Perrier sent two banners that worked fairly well. However, it’s a good thing I made Chef Ben do a screen test with me prior to the bloggers’ red carpet arrival.

#LDNBLoggersTea-London-bloggers-Afternoon-TeaYep. We had to move it a bit higher to create the illusion of a real Step and Repeat for our bloggers who can stretch as high as our Chef Big Ben. A super speedy staff member fixed it just as bloggers were arriving.

#LDNBLoggersTea-London-bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

What was different about this event from traditional Hollywood affairs is bloggers tend to arrive super early.  We all want to get the money shot and upload it to social networks first.

#LDNBloggersTea- The Money Shots

Countless emails and meetings went in to planning this debut afternoon tea. For this first time, I was in charge of arranging the quarterly meeting for this group. I didn’t want to let Selena or the bloggers down.

Making sure we had tons of money shots was key. This was something I worked on with our Conrad London St James afternoon tea as well.#LDNBloggersTea-London-Bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

#LDNBloggersTea-London-Bloggers-Afternoon-TeaWe wanted each blogger to feel like a star upon arrival. I had arranged to take their pictures as they entered, and Chef Ben wanted to hand them a glass of champagne. His team rounded up spotlights, and he had a staff member snap pictures of our blogger ‘celebs’ upon arrival so I could help with last minute details. The bloggers had only been warned that there would be ‘paparazzi’ attending and to be ready with a smile and pose.

It was an interesting phenomenon to see a group of people so accustom to whipping out a camera, shuttering at having their own pictures taken. Fair enough. We assured them the pictures were just for entertainment/sentiment purposes and wouldn’t be splashed on the next Daily Mail.

I asked Chef Ben to put display tables near the windows because the room he chose features such gorgeous views of Hyde Park and natural lighting. When he learned our final attendee number, he rearranged the table setting to utilise the spacious room best. A large table with all of us seated together has only happened once before at a #LDNBloggersTea, to my knowledge.LDNBloggersTea-London-Bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

I took a few quick pics before the bloggers arrived just to show you a little before and after regarding the process.

#LDNBloggersTea-London-Bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

Chef Ben also surprised us with a decorated Christmas tree. Moments before the afternoon tea started and things really began to sparkle, our goodie bags were placed with care under the tree.

#LDNBLoggersTea-London-bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

#LDNBLoggersTea-London-bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

#LNDBloggersTea- Laurent-Perrier and Lancaster London

A HUGE shoutout goes to Laurent-Perrier for helping with another idea. Because of Chef Ben’s Master Chef experience, I suggested he arrange to have bloggers learn some industry secrets.  He came through like a champ by having a Laurent-Perrier representative attend the start of our afternoon tea. #LDNBLoggersTea-London-bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

Bloggers not only had bottles, and I mean bottles, of champagne dumped on them throughout our event but also had the chance to learn about pairing champagne with the right food.

LDNBloggersTea-London-Bloggers-Afternoon-TeaLearning these tricks made their experience a little more special. And, Chef Ben convinced Laurent-Perrier to give away a bottle of their exquisite champagne to one very, very lucky blogger.

It was a big surprise to lucky blogger Sara from Big World, Small Me when Chef Ben yelled her name as the winner of that bottle featured in the pink giftbox in the picture above!

#LDNBLoggersTea- The Food

Chef Ben also gave the group a first look at some of the selections for the Lancaster London Christmas Afternoon Tea. Getting bloggers exclusive opportunities is also an important ingredient to coordinating the afternoon teas.

Again, I’m going to leave all the food dazzling (AKA #foodporn) pictures to them. However, here’s a glimpse of these fantastic writers, photographers and social media experts hard at work.LDNBloggersTea-London-Bloggers-Afternoon-Tea

Contrary to that shot above, the core of these events is about us socializing with each other. And yes… sometimes we have to send a cheeky tweet the person sitting next to us to do it. 😉

If you read Ho! Ho! Hotel Chocolat- A Tasting Adventure, you know that white chocolate is indeed my favourite. So, I give the gold star of the day to the White Chocolate and Raspberry Lollypops. They literally exploded in my mouth. Notice the pop rocks lining the outside layer? Boom Sha-Ca-La-Ca-Tingle-Ta-Ca!

And of course, Chef Ben made sure his super scones had a stellar debut with our bloggers. After all, he is the #letsgetsconed king of the social media world!

#LDNBloggersTea- What’s Next?

So, there’s a little inside scoop of the planning details for our most recent #LDNBloggersTea. There’s tons more I could tell you, but keeping some elements of surprise under wraps makes the next event that much better!

Speaking of that…..

Yeah, not yet.

You’ll have to stay tuned, Sunny blogger friends. We currently have a few options for the next #LDNBloggersTea, but it’s incredibly tough to top Chef Big Ben and the amazing staff at Lancaster London.

If you’re looking to plan a bloggers’ event big or small, get in touch. My extensive experience in event planning with entertainment corporations, luxury brands, media and political press conferences could give you a fantastic experience. The things I could tell you over a warm cuppa tea…
