21 Covent Garden and Captain Jack Sparrow

I was on a fast mission to get to 21 Covent Garden when Ashleigh raved about it during our afternoon tea.

21 Covent GardenSunny friends, you know that Covent Garden owns my heart. However, did you know that I have Italian blood running through my veins? When I learned 21 Covent Garden features ‘three floors of modern Italian drinking and dining in the heart of Covent Garden’, I had to go.

Mr. Sunny and I arrived an hour before our reservation. Yep. Reading the menu online the previous night made us super excited!

21 Covent Garden

It’s located right in the Piazza. Surprisingly, for such a touristy location, 21 Covent Garden offers a very intimate experience.

As soon as we were seated, I commandeered our drink order. My Florida girl background and fetish with bubbly took over. I immediately chose a Mango Bellini.

21 Covent GardenMr. Sunny wanted a Peroni. But when I saw the ‘Jack Sparrow’ on the drink menu, I told him he had no choice. Pirates of the Caribbean is my favourite movie. The drink is based on the classic New Orleans Sazerac. It has Martell VS, Sailor Jerry rum, Kamm & Son ginseng bitters & Pernod Absinthe.

We loved our cocktails! Mr. Sunny agreed with the menu description, ‘…a perfect after-dinner tipple. Definitely not for the faint of heart!’ Well, neither is Captain Jack Sparrow.

We really didn’t care that our drinks didn’t match our Starters, Risotto and Calamari.

21 Covent Garden

Wild Mushroom and Truffle Risotto with marscapone and parsley £8.95

21 Covent Garden

Black Pepper Calamari with saffron aioli £7.25

We both agreed the calamari is on our ‘best ever’ list. My risotto was silky smooth and beautifully flavoured. A jewel of a dish.

To accompany our main course, I had a glass of the Vina Marro Rioja. Mr. Sunny had an Italian beer, Moretti. We ate linguine and eggplant.

21 Covent Garden

Cornish Crab Linguine with garlic, lime, chilli, and coriander £14.25

21 Covent Garden

Aubergine Parmesan Shutter features baked eggplant, tomato, sweet basil and mozzarella £10.50

Mr. Sunny loved his entrée. I was a bit nervous when I saw how thickly cut the eggplant pieces were. However, I’ve never had eggplant cooked so perfectly. Blimey it was good!

Because everything was so fantastic, we couldn’t sail by dessert…21 Covent Garden

That’s the Affogato. We giggled a bit when it landed on the table because weren’t sure what to do with the separate glasses. Our server said to pour the espresso and Frangelico over the vanilla ice cream. BOOM!

Delicious!

Just when we thought our evening was over, Paul, the General Manager, encouraged us to check out the Print Room upstairs for post-dinner drinks.

21 Covent GardenSince he (and all of the staff) had been so exquisite throughout the evening, we couldn’t turn down the opportunity.

Interior 21 Covent Garden (6) 21 Covent Garden

The views in this Covent Garden crow’s nest are spectacular. I’d encourage anyone to reserve it for a private party or Christmas ‘Do’.21 Covent Garden

21 Covent Garden

There’s also a balcony area you can reserve for an even smaller party.

Mr. Sunny, my loyal drink matey, gave the San Sebastian a shot.

21 Covent Garden Print Room

Flavour of Havana 3y rum, Carton banana liqueur, passion fruit and cinnamon syrup

Again, another hit.

Just as we were leaving, I stopped for a photo of the bar. Our drink server indicated it would be best as an action shot and started making us two drinks to close our evening.21 Covent Garden Print Room

The way this swashbuckler moved with stealth and passion behind the bar held me prisoner. Had I just met a real life Captain Jack Sparrow?21 Covent Garden Print Room

For a motherload of a fun cocktail list that will give you sea legs on dry land, head up to the Print Room, schooner rather than later!21 Covent Garden

Ashleigh said she’d been to 21 Covent Garden three times since writing her review. I know that this lass will be too.  It’s an absolute treasure of Covent Garden. Arrrrrr!

Our experience at 21 Covent Garden was complimentary for the purpose of a review. This did not influence our opinion of the food, drinks or service.21 Covent Garden Restaurant Review

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers- the Perfect Gift for a London Girl

If you’re struggling to find the perfect gift for a London girl who seems to have everything, buy her a flower design course at the Covent Garden Academy of Flowers.

Whether it’s a gift for Mother’s Day, Easter, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, a birthday, a wedding or shower, there isn’t a girl on the planet who wouldn’t truly love this opportunity. And love YOU for it!

However, I recently had the chance to take the full day Covent Garden Experience course as a guest, and I have to say it was one of the most valuable and fun experiences in my life.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

At 7:45am on a Saturday morning, I arrived outside the Vauxhall Tube Station and waited with 10 lovely ladies for the course’s instructor, Gillian. I learned that several girls had received it as a present from their husband, a few were brides to be (one of whom came all the way from Grand Cayman!) and the rest were flower fans who wanted to move their knowledge to the next level.

Gillian arrived promptly, and we began our journey to the New Covent Garden Flower Market. It’s where 75% of London’s florists buy their flowers.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Gillian gave us a tour of this ginormous facility and let us wander through the aisles at various times so we could witness how much was available.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers (3)

There isn’t anything you can’t find here.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers Flower Collages (1)

Gillian made sure we made a special stop at Dennis Edwards Flowers Ltd.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

We actually met Dennis, who is a total ROCKSTAR and lady charmer. He gave us each a complimentary rose. (Thanks girls for letting me borrow two for the photo!)

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

We took the tube back to the Covent Garden Academy of Flowers, located in St Martin’s Courtyard in Covent Garden.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Once we were all seated, Gillian began teaching us how to groom our flowers.

Simply put, Gillian is a delicate flower NINJA! The grace and ease with which she demonstrated techniques was captivating. This beautiful English Rose is also the author of a book!

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers (22)

Once she showed us numerous strategies, we each grabbed a bucket full of a flower or fern and began our task.

I worked mostly with eucalyptus. By the time I was done, my hands were very sticky but smelled divine!

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Once we all finished, Gillian demonstrated more tips for our bouquets. Her hands worked magic and made the process look extremely simple.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Then, she turned us loose to choose whatever we wanted among their infinite selection of flowers.

Here’s how I started:

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Gillian floated through the room as we all assembled our bouquets, and her exquisite patience and approachable demeanor made it easy to ask questions and less daunting to construct our masterpieces.

Here’s how I finished:

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Although I loved my bouquet, I think the other belles in the course far surpassed my humble attempt. Gillian instructed us to leave our bouquets in buckets filled half way with water so they could have a “drink” while we lunched.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

When we returned, she showed us how to trim the stems so we could perfectly package our flowers for an easy transport home.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

However, once they were sized appropriately, we learned a trick to keep them wrapped in water until they could be placed in a vase. (Surprisingly, cutting the cellophane was my most difficult task of the day!)

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

With our remaining time, Gillian taught us how to make a button hole (That’s a “boutonniere” for you Americans).

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

Throughout the course, I learned many tips and tricks for choosing, assembling and caring for flowers, including the MOST IMPORTANT rule to follow when creating an arrangement.

I’m not going to share everything I learned because that would ruin the allure of the course, but here’s one tip- buy a pair of these snazzy Japanese scissors for cutting stems. They have them at the Academy, and once I saw a demonstration with them, I became a believer!

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

I thoroughly enjoyed my day and look forward to taking more courses. I’ve also told every man I know that this is the guaranteed way to a woman’s heart! Surround her with flowers for a day and teach her how to make them last for a lifetime!

The pride I felt when completing my arrangement was enormous.

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers Covent Garden Academy of Flowers (29)

We all left absolutely thrilled with what we learned and what we had to show for our day.

Mr. Sunny and his family could not believe that I made the bouquet!

Aside from offering classes, the Covent Garden Academy of Flowers also makes arrangements for sale for businesses, holidays, special occasions or just random acts of kindness! This is one of the designs they were working on for a London hotel…

Covent Garden Academy of Flowers

The next Covent Garden Experience course is offered at the Covent Garden Academy of Flowers on June 28th. But, if you go to their website, they have tons of shorter evening courses that you can enjoy sooner. Some of them include: Mother’s Day, Tables for Home and Events, Christmas Arrangement and Contemporary Design.

I just can’t imagine why any person would struggle to think of the perfect gift idea for a lady in London, when the Covent Garden Academy of Flowers makes it soooooo easy!

GUEST POST: London Winter Pub Guide!

London has some of the best pubs in the world, perfect for enjoying a pint and keeping warm this Christmas. Why not spend a Sunday relaxing with friends, over a glass of mulled wine and a roast lunch; or just venture down and stretch out in front of the fire with the day’s papers?

Craft Beer Company, Clerkenwell

This amazing specialist boutique pub serves a range of real ales and specialist lagers, spread over two floors. Ornate mirrors decorate the walls, with stained glass windows and a sparkling central chandelier providing a really intimate, Christmassy feel.

While the food is basic, you can find delightful British snacks like pork pies and scotch eggs. The beers are undoubtedly the main attraction, providing one of the largest selections in London.

A total of 37 beers, with 16 sourced solely from domestic artisan ale makers, provide the freshest and tastiest brews in London.

The Craft Beer Co: 82 Leather Ln, London EC1N 7TR

Auld Shillelagh, Stamford Hill

For jolly old evenings with Irish music, played by a boozy orchestra of banjos, flutes and piccolos, Auld Shillelagh is a real joy, particularly after a few glasses of red wine.

You can soak up the joyful, unaffected atmosphere with friends, enjoying the company of gregarious bar staff who do their best to make your evening a pleasure.

For the best evening, catch a pub quiz over a few Guinesses; their menu is unfussy and simplistic, which is often the best way.

Auld Shillelagh: 105 Stoke Newington Church St, London N16 0UD

London Winter Pub Guide

Southampton Arms, Highgate Road

A sign outside reads ‘Ales, cider, meat’ and it couldn’t be any simpler at the Southampton Arms. You can buy a roast pork bap with crackling and apple sauce for £3.90, served with a pint of cloudy cider. There’s a thick coal fire, old white tiled walls and period decor, giving this boozer a real wartime feel.

Venture outside for a cigar on their intimate brick floor garden, with your jacket on of course; this boozer is unfussy and full of character, just as English pubs should be.

Southampton Arms: 139 Highgate Rd, London NW5 1LE

The Zeitgeist, Lambeth

Many Brits will be hard-pushed to admit it, but the Germans really do make the best beers, so it’s only fair that you stop by at their best boozer for a ‘wunder-bar’ time. This pub is so authentic it could have been dropped here from Berlin, with highly-efficient Deutsche staff, steely German football and strong, heavyweight beers aplenty.

Their selection of 16 draught and 32 bottled German beers is extensive, with some only requiring a half pint, full of Deutsche punch and flavour. The kitchen also serves the German classics like schnitzel and currywurst, which are both delicious.

The Zeitgeist: 49-51 Black Prince Rd, London SE11 6AB

London Winter Pub Guide

Princess Louise, Holborn

The Princess Louise of Holborn is a great little boozer, a maze of nooks and crannies, etched glass, old wooden bar stools and eighteenth century lamps. You can sit in a cosy corner and no-one would know you were there; it’s a real warren of warmth and joy, particularly after a couple of lagers.

Being a Sam Smith’s pub, the beers are really cheap too, so you can enjoy an afternoon here without it costing the earth; it’s rather like going back in time!

Wherever you go in London this Christmas, you will be sure to find some really good pubs – seek out some of these gems or spend an afternoon in one particular area, like Clerkenwell, Richmond or Fulham; you’ll never get bored, or cold!

Thank you for reading, Sunny friends. Best wishes for the remainder of 2013, where ever you chose to spend it!

Do you know these Neal’s Yard Remedies secrets?

Sunny in London friends, I want to tell you a few secrets about Neal’s Yard Remedies. Are you ready?

SECRET #1- A gift in a blue bottle from Neal’s Yard Remedies is better than a gift in a blue box from Tiffany’s.

Neal's Yard Remedies

This isn’t a sponsored post. I’m just legitimately obsessed.

My first Sunny in London post was about my love for Covent Garden that began nearly 15 years ago. Specifically, I’m in love with Neal’s Yard in Covent Garden. When I started my Instagram account, the first picture I posted was intentionally of this slice of heaven.

Neals-Yard-Sunny-in-London-3

It’s a tricky, tiny “road” to find. I like it that way. When I arrive there, I feel like I arrived in the colourful Land of Oz!

If you aren’t familiar with Neal’s Yard Remedies, the Covent Garden location on Neal’s Yard was their first store.

Neal's Yard Remedies

Neals-Yard-Sunny-in-London

The international company now has 40 stores across the UK.

Our vision was to bring the expertise of the apothecary and our holistic approach to health and beauty to local people and their communities.

SECRET #2- The distinctive features of the apothecary trade was the blue bottles filled with herbs and potions lining their shelves, and this is where Neal’s Yard Remedies found their inspiration for their brand and design.

I won’t echo the endless amount of beauty bloggers boasting about the benefits for you featured inside these bottles. The magical elixir in each natural and organic product (especially Wild Rose Beauty Balm!) isn’t the only reason I’m in love with Neal’s Yard Remedies.

SECRET #3-  You won’t find a company that works harder to interact with their customers/followers and to provide a positive experience. When they say, “What matters to us are people, their health, and their happiness”, they mean it.

In light of the typhoon in the Philippines, we are donating 10% of today's sales to @decappeal. Our thoughts are with all those affected.

— Neal's Yard Remedies (@NYR_Official) November 14, 2013

The list of campaigns they support is extensive. From what I’ve seen on their Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram accounts, they make a HUGE effort to recognise individuals who mention their products. They had a contest last week in which I entered and was ridiculously hopeful.

Just 'cause it's Friday, we're giving away a Wild Rose Beauty Balm… RT & follow by midnight to #win #NaturalBeauty pic.twitter.com/RrMjyw8qFE

— NYR Organic UK (@nyrorganicuk) November 8, 2013

I didn’t win. What I received was better. When I retweeted and replied with my enthusiasm, they responded with…

@Sunny_in_London Aw thank you! That comment has brightened our Friday. x

— NYR Organic UK (@nyrorganicuk) November 8, 2013

AND FOLLOWED ME BACK. It was better than winning.

I hope you find a basket of blue bottles under your Christmas tree and perhaps a spa gift certificate to the Neal’s Yard Beauty Spa on King’s Road. If you find a company that does a better job of creating brand loyalty, let me know, because I don’t think there is one.

How to make Winter Wonderland wheely fun!

No proper Londoner misses Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park! It kicks off this year on November 22nd at 5pm and lasts until January 4th. It’s one of the most anticipated annual events in town and is for any age.

Winter-Wonderland

You can skate in the ice rink, shop in the Christmas markets, visit the famous Bavarian Village and go to Santa Land for a visit with Father Christmas.

Winter Wonderland

Perhaps you might wish to have a stein at the Star Tavern and Village Square and then pop over for a pint at The Carousel Bar while dancing to a live DJ as you spin 360 degrees? Ok, maybe don’t do them in that order, but they are both very fun!

Winter-Wonderland

Winter-Wonderland

I’ll be honest, those pictures were a bit staged. I’m not a beer drinker. It was too great of a photo opp to skip.

I actually really enjoy champagne, and of course, Winter Wonderland has that too. For £55-£60, you can purchase a VIP Pod on the Giant Observation Wheel.

Winter Wonderland

It seats four people per pod. This price is for the whole pod, not per person. (Phew!) For an additional £30, you can have a bottle of champagne for your ride. It’s a bit pricey for an experience that lasts 12-15 minutes, but for a special occasion or bucket-list activity, I recommend it. However, it can be rather comical.

You begin by booking your tickets in advance online. That’s not complicated, but it does require gambling on the weather forecast for your plans. When you arrive, you need to let the attendants know you have special tickets, and then you wait in a designated area.

Winter-Wonderland

Once you receive your bottle of bubbly, you board your pod and off you go- 60 metres up in the air. Unfortunately, the night we went it was a bit rainy and very windy. Our pod’s door didn’t quite close all the way, so I was frantic about our safety. Pounding a bottle of champagne while trying to snap pictures of the view as the pod shook from the wind was hilarious. Drink, snap, look, scream. Drink, snap, look, scream.

 Winter-Wonderland-3

We had a blast. Also, we purchased some ride tokens and rode one of the roller coasters. As a girl who grew up in Orlando’s theme parks, I have to say the coaster was pretty thrilling.

 Winter Wonderland

If you can, try to avoid a Saturday, as it’s the busiest day for attendance. There were a few occasions last year when they did stop allowing people to enter Winter Wonderland because of high crowd levels, but certainly make the effort to go this year if you are in London.

Please let me know about your experience!

Why don’t Brits have BACON candles?

‘Tis the Season of sensory explosions! The sights of the decorated tree in Trafalgar Square and the twinkling lights on Regent Street, the tastes of spicy mulled wine and sugary treats, the sounds of carols being sung and the smells of BACON candles.

Yankee Candle Bacon

Ok, definitely not the last bit.

To my knowledge, there isn’t a scented bacon candle for sale in all of London Town, and that’s why I’m writing this post. HELP!

I’m actually not sure how I feel about faux bacon in the air. It’s kind of like marinara sauce- it’s delicious when a pot’s simmering in the kitchen. But a candle attempting to capture the aroma? … not so much.

Scented candles make me go all warm and fuzzy, and this is the time of year when I miss the variety available in American stores the most.

Yankee CandleYankee Candle

I understand that there’s a Yankee Candle UK website, however, it’s just not the same. While the list is fairly established, it doesn’t hold a candle (sorry, I couldn’t resist the cliché) to what is offered in America.

Yankee Candle- Sunny in LondonYankee Candle

Crackling Iced Cookie, Candy Cane Cottage, North Pole, Sugared Apple, Magical Frost Forest and Santa’s Candy Castle. Just typing that list of seducing scents featured at a Yankee Candle Store in the US is making my stomach growl and mouth water.

Yankee Candle- Sunny in London

Don’t even get me started on Vanilla Caramel, Pumpkin Buttercream and Christmas Cookie! Ohhhh yummy!

Yankee Candle- Sunny in London

Yankee Candle- Sunny in London

It can’t be just a girl thing either, because they even sell MAN CANDLES!

Yankee Candle

So, what should I do to satisfy my candle addiction? Last year I stocked up on candles while visiting the US and shipped a ginormous box of them to my flat in London. That can’t be the best answer! They have to be available somewhere in London. Well, maybe not every scent…

Yankee Candle- Sunny in London

That one I can understand.

I truly love and appreciate living in the UK, but as you can see, it’s clear that I miss my unique candle collection.

Sunny In London celebrates both beautiful weather and ways you can find inner sunshine through experiences in London. Having a scrumtpous candle burning in my flat creates tremendous joy for me. If you have any suggestions of stores in London that have an interesting variety of scents, please write them below!

Hyde Park, Santa and warm, bubbly water

Santa Land, the Giant Observation Wheel, and the Bavarian Village. In just over a week Hyde Park will be completely transformed in to a magical Winter Wonderland.

While these six weeks of outrageous holiday revelry are a highlight of the Christmas season for many Londoners (including me!), Hyde Park’s other attractions throughout the year add to its allure.

Going for a 5 mile run on one of the park’s footpaths is one of my favorite activities on a Sunny in London day. Taking a boat ride on the Serpentine is high on my list of must do’s. However, even though I know it’s popular to swim in the water, I think it’s best for me to leave that with these two…

Hyde Park Sunny in London

With all of these adventure opportunities, sometimes people forget that Hyde Park is also the location of three different memorials. The most recognized is the Albert Memorial, which Queen Victoria commissioned in memory of Prince Albert.

Hyde Park Sunny in London

It’s located north of the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington Gardens.

Hyde Park Sunny in London

Next, there’s a 7 July Memorial which features 52 pillars honoring the victims of the 7 July 2005 London Bombings.

Finally, the Diana Memorial Fountain opened in 2004, and for me it’s the most captivating. It’s built from pieces of granite, is intended to reflect her life, and symbolises her quality and openness.

Hyde Park Sunny in London

After a little research with Royal Parks, I learned the water flows from the highest point in two directions as it cascades, swirls and bubbles before meeting in a calm pool at the bottom. Also, it’s continuously being refreshed and is drawn from London’s water table.

Hyde Park Sunny in London

The sparkling, flowing water and serenity in this area beautifully balance the chaotic atmosphere of the Christmassy festivities featured in Winter Wonderland. It’s certainly one of my favorite places to find sunny adventures in London.

What activities in Hyde Park would you recommend?

Arundel and a Castle in the Sky

As a city girl, I don’t like to step too far away from London. However, for an opportunity to see a castle in the sky, I make an exception.

This is exactly what I experienced on a beautiful long-weekend getaway to West Sussex.

We started with a drive in our convertible to Arundel, and as we entered the market town we could see the restored medieval castle floating in the sky.

Arundel

Well, maybe it wasn’t “floating,” but the image was breath taking. We certainly don’t have views like this in Florida!

Arundel

Arundel Castle

We checked in to The Swan Hotel, which is located in the heart of Arundel.

ArundelArundel

Our first journey was a walk to one of the local pubs. It provided great “refreshments” after a two-hour drive from North London.

Arundel Black_Rabbit

Once refueled, we began our unprepared exploration through the streets and wandered in to the Cathedral.

Arundel-Castle

Arundel

Arundel

 Arundel-17

For Day 2, we drove through nearby towns Littlehampton and Bognor Regis and had a delicious fish and chips dinner back at The Swan. We saved the castle tour for the morning of Day 3 because the weather forecast was spectacular. Purchasing the Gold Access tickets provides access to everything. If you’re making the trip from London to Arundel, it makes sense to spend few extra pounds for the best tour. When you make the extra 10% charity contribution, you receive double the amount in a voucher that you can use in the coffee shop, restaurant or gift shop.

Arundel

However, you could skip the £1 admission to enter the small zoo in the castle gardens. Since my husband/photographer/driver/tour guide has spent countless hours walking up and down King’s Road with me on shopping expeditions, I figured I could appease his excitement to see meerkats for 10 minutes and went through it with him.

Arundel

Arundel

Next, we entered the Fitzalan Chapel. The gentleman stationed inside eagerly assisted people with their questions and approached us to inquire if there was anything that made us curious. He was a rich vessel of historic knowledge and English pride.

Arundel-Castle

Arundel-Castle

Once inside the castle, which was officially established on Christmas Day in 1067, we were unable to take pictures. Actually seeing the suits of armor and ferocious medieval weapons is mind-blowing. A picture really wouldn’t capture how unsettling it is to stand before a battle axe or cleaving weapon. I was much more at ease viewing the remodeling that the Duke of Norfolk did for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s visit in December of 1846.  This included seeing her bed, the guest book which displays her signature, and her toilet. (Wahoo!)

Finally, we made our way up hundreds of stairs to the Keep. (Girls, skip the heels and break out the flats for this adventure! There are several super tiny spiral staircases.)

After feeling like we had made it to the top of Mt Olympus, we collected pictures of the gorgeous English countryside from every outlook.

Arundel-23

Finally, we descended and made our way back to the car to begin our journey to Midhurst.

I would recommend visiting Arundel to Londoners and all those interested in English history and exquisite scenery. The castle has been in the Duke of Norfolk family for 400 years. Since it still serves as their residence, make sure it’s open to the public before planning a special trip to Arundel.

Also, I’d love to answer questions you have about visiting the area and would appreciate feedback from those who have also visited. If you have any suggestions of similar trips, please share them too!

The Charles Dickens Museum and a curious conversation with Nan

Prior to living in London I was preparing for a holiday trip here and had one of my most memorable weekly phone calls with my Grandmother. Because she never had opportunities to travel internationally, she was very curious about life across the pond. She asked, “So, what do they do for Christmas over there? Do they celebrate it?”

I responded playfully to her innocent question, “Grandma! Helllllooo??? CHARLES. DICKENSSSSS. They INVENTED Christmas!”

Without hesitation, she fired back, “Sunny!!!! JESUS INVENTED CHRISTMAS!”

There’s nothing like a verbal smackdown from your 87-year old Grandmother.

While she is undeniably right, it also is fair to say that historians would support the fact that Charles Dickens shares responsibility for creating much of the way Christmas is celebrated today in America and the UK.

After my trip, I explained the similarities and differences between the cultures during the holiday season to my Grandmother, which I know is the information she really wanted through her question.

As we roll in to the holiday season, I feel it’s best to start by recognising one of England’s most influential literary and cultural figures.

Charles-Dickens-Museum

On a beautiful sunny in London day, I visited the Charles Dickens Museum on 48 Doughty Street in Bloomsbury. It’s where he lived from 1837 to 1839 and wrote ‘Oliver Twist’ and ‘Nicholas Nickleby’.

After paying £8 for an adult ticket, I spent about an hour and a half walking through the residence.

Charles-Dickens-Museum

During my time, I stood in Dickens’ study. I’m sure any literary lover could appreciate how I examined the desk and books and attempted to transcend in to the mind of the author in the very room where he crafted his tales.

Charles-Dickens-Museum

Charles-Dickens-Museum

Another treat was walking around his Dining Room. As I stared at the artifacts, I envied how much information they had absorbed. I’m sure many great, colorful conversations were captured in these walls.

Charles-Dickens-Museum

Charles-Dickens-Museum

Throughout the home, there were treasured works of art crafted for the novelist.

Charles-Dickens-Museum

In the basement, I enjoyed seeing the Kitchen, Scullery and Washhouse where servants maintained the household’s daily activities.

Charles-Dickens-Museum

Charles-Dickens-Museum

When I made it to the top floor, I saw the most powerful display. Dickens, a strong social commentator, made the biggest statement about his life to me when I stepped in to a room which displayed this…

Charles-Dickens-Museum

The description with it indicated that Dickens forever wanted a reminder of his past by obtaining bars from the Marshalsea Debtors’ Prison in which his father spent time during his childhood.

Quotations from his very successful works decorated the room’s walls.

Charles-Dickens-Museum

If you’re looking to celebrate the impact Charles Dickens made on the written word and the holiday season, a visit to the Charles Dickens Museum is well worth your time. The staff was exceptionally knowledgable and friendly.
