This was still operating as the YWCA in the early 1980’s I used to do Aerobics there in my lunch hour as I worked at BICC around the corner. I remember the beautiful old swimming pool, it never had anyone swimming in it, I hope it is not now lost.

Just found my old travel book of London dated 1977 and thought I’d check to see if there was a website for my fav place to stay when I was in town between 1972 and 1977. It was cheap, safe and convenient. Remember the cafeteria well. Surprised to see it had turned into an upmarket hotel. Thanks for the history and the memories. Would love to have afternoon tea there one day for old time’s sake. Might even check out the museum while I’m there!

Thank you! It was driving me crazy that I couldn’t find anywhere if it really was the old YWCA! I stayed there during my first visit to England, in 1996. The language school nearby (St Giles College, I think it was called) had a contract with them to lodge their foreign students, well situated but depressing place!
The cafetería was OK, I guess, but since it wasn’t open on Sunday, they shut down the hot water for the showers as well – not a pleasant experience in December, let me tell you.
Nice to see it’s a beautiful hotel now… I can always say I was a guest there for two weeks… 😉
