The Orange Tree Totteridge: North London Gastropub Gem
If you want a lovely gastropub experience in North London, put The Orange Tree Totteridge on your list. This local gem is where my husband and I frequently visit for everything from a casual drink to a special occasion or holiday dinner. Additionally, we’ve been to all of this pub group’s North London locations.
In the ten years I’ve lived in North London and maintained a food blog, The Orange Tree has consistently been a top go-to spot for us because of its inviting atmosphere, excellent service and delicious food.
Part of the Premium Country Pubs Group, the Orange Tree Totteridge offers a relaxed yet sophisticated dining experience, perfect for couples or families. In fact, we’re also regulars at a few of their other locations—The Arkley in Barnet, The Old Bull & Bush in Hampstead and The Freemason’s Arms in Hampstead—all with menus and atmospheres that make every visit feel like a treat.
Menus at the Orange Tree
One of the best things about the Orange Tree in Totteridge North London is its versatile and seasonal menus. No matter when you visit, you’ll find a selection of options that reflect the freshest ingredients of the moment. Their menus range from the All Day Menu and Sunday Menu to options for special events, children’s meals and even a Dine at Home menu. Vegan and dessert lovers will find their own dedicated sections and breakfast fans are not forgotten either.
On our most recent visit, we were invited to enjoy the Wine & Dine experience. This is a carefully curated three-course dinner paired with luxury wines, all for £100 for two people. This experience allowed us to sample some of their most popular dishes. As always, it lived up to our expectations.
Food Highlights
The Orange Tree Totteridge is known for its creative take on British classics and our meal didn’t disappoint. I started with the Pan-fried wild scallops. This is a delicate dish accompanied by kohlrabi pickle and roasted apple ketchup, giving it a perfect balance of sweet and tart flavours.
My husband opted for the Chipotle Sticky Chicken and enjoyed it. The karaage fried chicken is crispy and flavourful. The rainbow slaw adds a refreshing crunch.
For mains, I indulged in the 30 Day-aged 10oz Rib-eye Steak. It comes with rustic thick-cut chips, beef dripping pangrattato shallots and exotic mushrooms. The steak is recommended to be cooked at Medium. However, I chose Medium Rare. It was juicy and tender. I found it to be cooked differently at varying bites but found it fantastic. I would look forward to having it again.
Mr Sunny chose the Slow-cooked British Pork Belly, a rich and hearty dish served with roasted apple ketchup, dauphinoise potato, Tenderstem broccoli and glazed carrots. He found it full of flavour. But, I do think he was a bit jealous of my steak. I appreciated his help finishing the bites that I couldn’t!
Dessert was equally indulgent. Mr Sunny had the famous Chocolate Bomb—a rich combination of chocolate brownie, Biscoff spread, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. If you prefer something else, there’s always the option to swap dessert for an after-dinner cocktail.
Service at the Orange Tree Totteridge
The service at the Orange Tree in Totteridge is consistently excellent. Whether we’re there for a quick drink and snacks or a more elaborate dinner, the staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. Even when it’s busy, which it often is on weekends, the quality of service doesn’t falter. We had stopped by for drinks just a week before our Wine & Dine experience. I’m pleased to say the service was equal and just as good on both occasions!
What’s Coming Up
The Orange Tree Totteridge is a popular spot, especially during the holidays, so booking ahead is always a good idea. I can say this as someone whose first visit was on Christmas Eve in 2011 at their Arkley location in Barnet.
I recommend subscribing to their email updates, which is how we’ve managed to snag spots for events like their Valentine’s Day dinners and other seasonal offers. Right now, they’re promoting their holiday menus, including the Festive Menu, Christmas Day Menu, Boxing Day menu, New Yer’s Eve Menu and New Year’s Day Menu. They even have a Breakfast with Santa on select Saturdays in December.
These events book up quickly, so if you’re planning a holiday meal, don’t wait too long.
I’ve published a Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok video sharing our experience, if you’d like to see more.
Final Thoughts
Our evening at the Orange Tree Totteridge was as delightful as always. It’s one of those places that works for a range of occasions—whether it’s a date night, a casual catch-up with friends or a larger family gathering. I’ve been there for each of these!
With its fantastic seasonal menus, great service and warm atmosphere, it’s easy to see why we keep coming back. If you’re in North London, this gastropub should definitely be on your radar, if it isn’t your local gastropub already.
