Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch Review

You would think that every restaurant in London has jumped on the bottomless brunch trend that has exploded here over the past few years. However, at this time, of all the Japanese restaurants- only one offers it. For this fun and delicious experience, you need to visit Issho-Ni, a Japanese restaurant and cocktail bar just outside the Shoreditch area.

Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch Review- Atmosphere

Not too far from Brick Lane you’ll find Issho-Ni which bills itself as a ‘friendly neighbourhood’ restaurant in London. After spending 90 minutes in this food and drink venue, we can say it honestly lives up to this tagline. And we weren’t just influenced by the gorgeous sunny weather on the Saturday we visited.

Issho-Ni-Bottomless-Brunch-Review-London-Japanese-Restaurant-1

Located on 185 Bethnal Green Road, it is easy to find. Once inside, you will find colourful decor and loads of natural light, which makes blowing up your Insta with their food super easy.

Tables are a nice distance from each other and the overall vibe matches the trendy, hipster expectations one has of the Shoreditch scene.

We paid careful attention to the activities of the tables around us, and other guests seem to be enjoying their experience as much as we were. Perhaps that flowing Prosecco had a little to do with it?

Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch Review- Service

As part of the Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch offer you can have Prosecco and/or a Bloody Mary for your drink. We both chose the Prosecco, as we’ve never been fans of the later.

You need to know that there was never a minute that our glasses weren’t topped up with more bubbles once their quantity reached less than half full. We never had to ask, and the tables around us experienced the same activity.

As a London food blogger receiving complimentary meals, I have to be careful to make sure my published food review matches what anyone can expect if they choose to follow my recommendation. Therefore, I can say in my opinion, it appeared that everyone visiting on the Saturday afternoon between 12pm-2pm was just as pleased as we were. Their service was equally as swift and as efficient as ours.

As noted, the Issho-Ni staff was incredibly attentive to fulfilling the ‘Bottomless Brunch’ concept in terms of drinks. And they were equally as enthusiastic about meeting this expectation with their food too.

Maki Rolls

After quickly being seated, the process for how the offer works was clearly explained to us. We were able to have as many sharing plates as we wanted from the ‘Snacks and Sushi’ starters section of the menu and allowed one main course each. The main course had to be ordered at the start of our experience, which was set to last 90 minutes. And, just as scheduled, we were notified when our last top up happened.

Issho-Ni seems to have a solid operational process for delivering what they promise. However, they never crossed the line of appearing to be ‘militant’ in their affect and attitude. Every encounter was indeed friendly and bubbly. Our time there was enjoyable and the food was lovely.

Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch Review- Food

Our Edamame, Chuka Seaweed, Kimchi and Wasabi Peas hit the table not long after we submitted our order. Additionally, the Sashimi and Maki Rolls arrive promptly.

My Sunny took the Edamame and Wasabi Peas for himself to enjoy, and I grabbed the Chuka Seaweed and Kimchi. We didn’t share because of our personal taste preferences. I actually have never had Kimchi before this, so I have nothing to offer in terms of a comparison. But, I thoroughly enjoyed my first time consuming this very popular and healthy dish.

Kimchi

The seaweed was simply divine. I could eat it several times a week, if given the opportunity.

We found the sashimi fresh and enjoyed all of the Maki Rolls. We had the chance to reorder, literally seconds after our sharing plate was empty. Mr Sunny and I opted for one row of the Salmon Avocado and one row of Prawn Tempura, even though we could have had two rows of each.

With all the flowing Prosecco and anticipation of the main courses, we wanted to make sure we weren’t wasteful. It proved to be a good move. We chose these two because we just aren’t huge vegetarian dish fans and I tend to avoid food with too much spice. Please know I’m a complete lightweight when it comes to flavours with a real kick, so there wasn’t anything wrong with the Spicy Salmon they gave us.

While Mr Sunny’s Chicken Katsu Curry wasn’t winning any ‘Most Photogenic Food’ awards, he felt it was utterly delicious. My Salmon Teriyaki was cooked perfectly and had excellent flavour. I wouldn’t change a thing with it and would happily have it again soon.

Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch Review- Final Thoughts

I would be excited to return to Isshho-Ni, which means ‘together with’ in Japanese. Their Bottomless Brunch offer is £36 per person. You add another £17 to take advantage of the unlimited drinks element. We felt the Prosecco seemed to be what you would find in a supermarket for around £7 a bottle. It’s not what we would buy ourselves, but it makes perfect sense for a bottomless offer in terms of restaurant efficiency and price mark up to maintain profit. We felt the overall price of Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch is fair, even though ours was gifted.

We arrived right around when they opened at 12pm. There were three other tables seated at the time. However, just like the flow of the Prosecco, the other tables filled quickly around us. Should you choose to pop in for the Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch experience, you would be smart to book a table in advance.

The crowd demographics was a nice mix of girlfriends having a Saturday brunch catch up and couples like us. I don’t think this is the place you should pick for a family get together with young children or babies. But, you probably already sussed that if you had common sense about what a ‘Bottomless Brunch’ involves.

We recommend the Issho-Ni Bottomless Brunch experience without a doubt! If you go, let us know your thoughts below. If you have other brunch recommendations around London- add those too!

Wildwood Kitchen in Seven Dials

Wildwood Kitchen is perfect for a fun, flavourful lunch in the Seven Dials area. Located near the the corner of Monmouth Street and Shaftesbury Avenue, this restaurant features freshly prepared homemade Mediterranean cooking. And it’s delicious!Wildwood Kitchen Review

Over the next few weeks I am going to have several features on Sunny in London which will highlight this great area of London.

Why? Because I love it!

So, let’s start with my lunch at Wildwood Kitchen!
Wildwood Kitchen Review

I was kind of gutted when my lunch date ordered the Baked Brie, toasted sourdough, tomato chilli jam selection from the Starters menu. Simply because- it’s what I wanted to have!
Wildwood Kitchen ReviewYou can imagine how jealous I was when it hit the table. It was just ooey gooey super yummy looking.

Since my first pick was taken, I opted for an old faithful- Calamari, rocket and aioli.
Wildwood Kitchen Review I loved every bite of my food!

Aside from daily seasonal specials, Wildwood Kitchen’s menu also features main courses in: Pasta and Risotto, Stone Baked Pizza, Grills and Seafood, and Salads.

From the Pasta and Risotto section, I ordered the Mushroom Risotto, white wine, parmesan, roasted fennel, and rocket.
Wildwood Kitchen ReviewRisotto always makes me weak in the knees. Having made this food many times myself, I know the key to this dish is a slow, steady stir. Without this technique, you just can’t achieve the right consistency. My Mushroom Risotto at Wildwood Kitchen could not have been served better.

However, once again my lunch date stole the show with this scrumptious dish…
Wildwood Kitchen ReviewHoly Healthy Eating, Batman! That’s the Goat’s cheese, with mixed leaves, carmelised onion, walnuts, butternut squash, and house dressing. With that many colors, I can’t even begin to imagine the level of antioxidants she consumed. And, she said it was fabulous!

Although the dessert menu looked ridiculously enticing, we both opted out as we had a full day of touring Seven Dials ahead of us.

Our service at Wildwood Kitchen was great. The location of the restaurant is tough to beat. The interior was simple, chic and attractive.
Wildwood Kitchen ReviewWildwood Kitchen ReviewWildwood Kitchen ReviewWildwood Kitchen ReviewFor a closer look at what the restaurant has to offer, you can check out their Main Menu. Or, maybe you want to check out what you can order for takeaway?

Wildwood Kitchen Information:

They’re open Monday-Saturday 12pm-11pm, Sunday 12pm-10:30pm.

If you aren’t in the Seven Dials area, you can also find Wildwood Kitchen in Didcot, Stratford Upon Avon, Barnes, Oakham, and pretty soon- Ludlow.

I’d recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for great food that’s well priced.

Why Mr. Sunny and I battled at Inamo Restaurant!

When Mr. Sunny and I headed to Inamo Restaurant recently, we weren’t too sure what the experience would involve. He had thoroughly reviewed the menu and was very excited. I had read the description of the concept restaurant and was curious.

The website explains it as an Oriental fusion restaurant and bar where ‘Diners place orders from an illustrated food and drinks menu projected on to their table service.’ Hmmmm.

From the outside, Inamo Restaurant on 134-136 Wardour Street, Soho, W1F 8ZP isn’t very mysterious.

Inamo Restaurant Review LondonOnce we stepped inside, we realised this experience would virtually be like no other.
Inamo Restaurant Review LondonOur table offered an interactive dining experience. We were given a quick explanation of the process to order, and then we were left to enjoy the dinner. As men usually do, Mr. Sunny immediately figured out how the virtual table worked and proudly declared, ‘I’m pretty sure I just ordered a beer.’ Inamo Restaurant Review London

BAM! Less than 30 seconds later, a server appeared with Mr. Sunny’s beer.

‘Oh, this is going to be my new favourite place!’ he exclaimed.

After a few minutes, I learned how to use the table as a menu and figured out how to order a glass of wine.Inamo Restaurant Review London

Inamo Restaurant Review London

Inamo Restaurant Review LondonMeet my Rioja!

Given Mr. Sunny had already investigated Inamo Restaurant’s menu, he started to occupy himself with the numerous games and additional activities available on our virtual table. There is a merchandise section, extras, and Chef Cam!
Inamo Restaurant Review London Chef CamMeantime, I photographed and completed the ordering process for all of our food.

It was suggested that we pick two small food items and one large per person. Because Mr. Sunny and I share many of the same preferences for Asian fusion, we indulged in everything together.

Our small food choices were the Baby Crispy Prawns, Seared Tuna Sashimi, Seared Salmon Maki, Chicken Satay and Tuna Maki.

Inamo Restaurant London Chicken SatayInamo Restaurant London Tuna MakiEach one was fabulous. I have to admit the prawns just exploded and melted in my mouth. They were like butter bombs! I loved them!

Based on the super fast service, we decided we would wait until we finished the small food choices before ordering the large ones, so as not to over order. Plus, Mr. Sunny couldn’t wait to challenge me in a game of Battleship!
Inamo Restaurant Review LondonWe set our ships and the game began.

Needless to say, he won and I lost.
Inamo Restaurant Review LondonDude. Not cool. I’m not happy about this. Isn’t there some kind of rule somewhere that states if you’re someone’s guest at dinner, you’re not supposed to beat him/her at any activities during that time? I’m sure a virtual etiquette book exists somewhere. Doesn’t it?

As I sulked in my chair, Mr. Sunny ordered our large food choices. We picked the Nigiri Set and Baby Malayan Chicken.Inamo Restaurant London Nigiri Set

Inamo Restaurant London Nigiri SetInamo Restaurant London Baby Malayan ChickenInamo Restaurant London Baby Malayan ChickenAgain, the food was amazing! However, I think my second glass of wine influenced my decision to endure playing another game. I don’t even know what this one was called. I lost again, quickly.
Inamo Restaurant Review LondonClearly, it was the booze impairing my virtual skills. Mr. Sunny may or may not have done a victory dance. I wasn’t paying attention. I was too distracted by my delicious dinner.

The food and speedy service at Inamo Restaurant make it well worth a visit. Despite my sarcasm above, I also loved the virtual table and games. While some people may find this type of ordering process impersonal, I didn’t. It made things fast and easy. There were numerous waitstaff available to answer any questions if we had them.

I thought it was super cool that when I was considering an option, an image of it was projected on to my plate. Fancy!Inamo Restaurant Review LondonInamo Restaurant isn’t intimate, but who cares! It’s fun and interactive. We truly had a great time. I would suggest Inamo Restaurant to many people for many different occasions. It’s definitely top on my list for people going on blind dates.

Mr. Sunny ended the night with this final thought, ‘With the fast beer, great food and table games, I could stay here all night!’

We did stop in the basement level for one more quick drink and enjoyed that area as well.Inamo Restaurant Review London

Inamo Restaurant Review LondonOur meal was complimentary for the purpose of a review. However, this does not influence our opinion of Inamo Restaurant. I had a fabulous meal and experience. But, I am still honestly upset about my husband beating me at Battleship and will continue to be a sore loser. 😉

Where does an Off the Wall lunch hit the target?

Ever have a lunch in London that was literally Off the Wall?

I did! And it was lovely!

Recently, I met Lucy from Foodie Force at the Apex London Wall Hotel for our first lunch date. You may remember Lucy from my evening at the Underground Cookery School in London. She was one of the bloggers at the event and frequently comments on Sunny in London. Lucy is a super fun foodie! You’ll love her blog.

I had been looking for an opportunity to invite her to lunch, and we were finally able to make it happen.

However, Sunny friends, she’s not what made this lunch Off the Wall.Off the Wall Apex London Wall Hotel

No, it’s actually the restaurant’s location! It’s in the Apex Hotel London on 7-9 Copthall Avenue, London EC2R 7NJ. If you’re familiar with that area of the City, it’s just south of the street named London Wall.

Ha!Ha! Get it? 😉

Since we dined on a weekend, we missed the hustle and bustle which takes place during the week at this restaurant. As much as possible, I like to avoiding visiting during peak times when it’s for a review. So, don’t be deceived by the empty seats.Off the Wall Apex London Wall Hotel

Off the Wall Apex London Wall HotelAfter we were seated and had chatted for a bit, Lucy and I ordered from the a la carte menu. For a Starter, she chose the Pan-fried Scallops, Broccoli Puree and Crispy Bacon.Off the Wall Apex London Wall Hotel

Oh man, was I jealous. It looked so colourful and delicious. She assured me- it was.

For my Starter, I picked the Buffalo Mozzarella, Figs Salad and Aged Balsamic Vinegar.Off the Wall Apex London Wall Hotel

This is the first time I have experienced figs served with mozzarella, rather than the old Italian tomato song and dance. I say, ‘Well done!’ to the Chef. The slight tartness of the balsamic vinegar paired with the light and airy mozzarella was perfection.

Next, we each had a Main. Lucy selected the Pan-fried Cod, Crushed New Potatoes, Mangetout and Lemon Oil. This fish was a great catch from every angle.Off the Wall Apex London Wall Hotel

Off the Wall Apex London Wall HotelOff the Wall Apex London Wall HotelI went for the Risotto, Roasted Courgette, Sundried Tomatoes, Ricotta Cheese and Watercress. While I’m not a fan of sundried tomatoes, I have to say every ingredient blended together with purpose and excellent flavour.

Off the Wall Apex London Wall HotelI often order Risotto and feature it on the blog. It’s also one of this Italian girl’s favourite dishes to make. The incorporation of ricotta in risotto is actually off the wall to me. Pun totally intended. I find its use here very intriguing. It was definitely the key to what made me cherish each bite.

The secret to risotto is stirring it slowly, while cooking it until it hits a perfect creamy consistency. Ricotta puts a very nice movement in to the mixture. I’ll have to seek some recipes with it and give it a go in my Sunny kitchen.

When I reflected on the surprising use of figs with mozzarella and ricotta in risotto, I started thinking that maybe there was a little more to the restaurant’s name, Off the Wall. Perhaps a sneaky ingredient here and there is a sub-theme to what they present?

One thing is absolutely for sure- they may be literally off the Wall, but their quality of food, service and ambiance is definitely on target!Off the Wall Apex London Wall Hotel

I’d recommend Off the Wall Restaurant in the Apex London Wall Hotel to anyone seeking a stylish, fine dining restaurant in the London City Centre. The ample natural lighting available in both the restaurant and bar make it a gold star location for a sunny in London day.Off the Wall Apex London Wall Hotel

Our meal at Off the Wall was complimentary for the purpose of a review. This did not influence my opinion. All thoughts represent original, honest impressions.

Have you been to the Off the Wall Restaurant and Bar? Where are your suggestions for a sunny restaurant in the City?

How You Can Get Stuck at the Print House

Nearly everything during our meal at the Print House Bar and Kitchen melted in our mouths. Except one, gooey, delicious delicacy. And I bet you’re wondering just what it was, Sunny friends! Print House Bar and Kitchen Review

As part of our recent tour of Stratford, Mr. Sunny and I spent a few hours eating at a new restaurant in London that truly is worth making the trip to the area. The venue made a strong impression on us, even before we arrived.

When we stopped to ask someone for directions, we were told to just look for a structure that resembled the shape of the Olympic torch. I was definitely skeptical about that. However, this is what we found…
Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

Sure enough, when we saw the distinctive Strand East Tower across a bridge, we knew we were headed to the right place.

Located on the bank of the Three Mills Wall river in Stratford, the building is very historic. It was previously a printing warehouse. Some designs that served as logos for the building are still featured on the exterior. It’s said that this dog originated as a pencil drawing by a printer.
Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

We loved the Print House Bar and Kitchen’s large exterior, and the interior was even more spacious. Having space for yourself is a bit of a battle in London, especially when dining. So, this restaurant’s modern, open style of the bar and dining areas is a real treat.Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

Having only opened a few months ago, the Print House features simple, but refined British food. Mr. Sunny and I ordered our adult beverages and made our menu selections.
Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

Mr. Sunny’s enjoyed his Starter, the Ham Hock Terrine, Scotch Egg, Beef Brisket and House Pickles. I had originally wanted it, but conceded to Mr. Sunny. I was thankful I did when it arrived. The Scotch egg had black pudding in it. That’s something I haven’t tried yet.
Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London Ham

When my Starter hit the table, I was elated! What a beautiful presentation!Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London Salmon

I loved my Smoked Salmon, Horseradish Creme Fraiche, Mixed Leaves and Apple. The seafood paired delicately with the tart slivers of green apple.

We learned that the Print House attracts a young professional crowd and gets quite busy in the evenings. Also, since their Sunday Roasts are spectacular, that’s generally their busiest day. Because it was Saturday and we couldn’t order from that menu, I naturally gravitated toward a burger.
Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London SalmonThat’s the Scotch Angus Beef Burger (180g) in a Brioche Bun, Tomato, Date Jam, Pickles, House Chips and Monterey. The bun was like a big, buttery pillow surrounding the beef. It melted like candy floss (cotton candy for my US readers) around the meat.

But that wasn’t the only thing melting during our meal. Mr. Sunny’s Main course topped my food again! He dined on the Lamb Shank in Citrus and Thyme with Creamy Colcannon.Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London Lamb Shank

Not only was it photogenic and scrumptious, but also the lamb melted off the bone. I made Mr. Sunny stop eating so I could grab this shot of the bare lamb bone to share with you.
Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London Lamb Shank

Between the brioche bun and the teflon lamb bone, our lunch was sliding right down our stomachs. Until this snuck on to the table…
Print House Sticky Toffee PuddingI’m a real sucker for Sticky Toffee Pudding. This one came with an airy cloud of vanilla marscapone. It had trouble written all over it.

This danger dessert trapped me like a spider’s web. My fork was lassoed to my hand! I couldn’t stop scooping big bites in my mouth. It’s the first time I’ve had sticky toffee pudding that wasn’t so sweet it stopped me after just a few bites.

Unbelievable.

Print House Bar and Kitchen has really fabulous food, but the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Vanilla Marscapone Cream is the true trophy. If you try it- it will trap you too!

Trying to ignore our food coma, we gazed out the window for a few more minutes.Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

We just weren’t quite ready to leave. Thank goodness the restaurant also has a huge terrace. Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

I hear it gets pretty lively with jazz bands and other activities at night and on weekends. Table tennis anyone?Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

And, you won’t believe what this Florida girl who is fully focused on finding sun and fun in London found next…Print House Bar & Kitchen Stratford London

That’s right, Sunny friends. Print House Bar and Kitchen also has a BEACH!

Our meal was complimentary for the purpose of a review. This did not influence our opinion of the dining experience. The delicious food did, however, influence my ability to get out of this beach chair.

Tentazioni Restaurant scores a 10 out of 10!

Of course this Italian girl was excited about getting an invitation to Tentazioni’s Cocktail and Tasting Menu Party! Why? Because it’s recognised as one of London’s leading Italian restaurants and has received fabulous reviews both in the UK and abroad. It’s also in a unique location. Bermondsey.

Tentazioni Restaurant London BermondseyI know every area of London has restaurants, but fine dining venues aren’t as easy to find out of the Central loop. In fact, here’s a little confession for ya’ Sunny friends… I can count on two hands how many times I’ve been South of the river. Only once was for a food experience.

Tentazioni not only caught my attention for this reason but also because this month it’s celebrating its 17th anniversary! Wow!

Let’s take a look inside and see just a bit of what makes it so special.Tentazioni Restaurant London Bermondsey

Its romantic first floor features changing art on the walls. In fact, Tentazioni hosts seasonal Art Exhibitions to promote young artists’ works. They also have live music events involving either Opera or Jazz.Tentazioni Restaurant London Bermondsey

Tentazioni Restaurant London BermondseyTentazioni Restaurant London BermondseyTentazioni Restaurant London BermondseySo, what’s featured on the menu, you ask? Here’s the food I had a chance to taste…

“Rubik” Cubi di Pesce Spada con Semi di Papavero su Caponatina di Melanzane
e Coulis di Peperone Rosso
(Swordfish Cubes with Poppy Seeds, Aubergines Ratatouille and Red Pepper
Coulis)

Carpaccio di Manzo con Indivia Belga Servito con Gelato al Foie Gras e
Fichi Freschi
(Beef Fillet Carpaccio with White Chicory Served with Foie Gras Ice cream and Juicy. Fresh Figs)

Ravioli di Zucca Arrostita con Amaretti e Mostarda di Frutta
Serviti al Burro e Salvia
(Roasted King Pumpkin Ravioli with Amaretti Biscuits and Fruit Mustard Served with Butter and Sage Sauce)

Tentazioni Restaurant London BermondseyMy favourite of those three absolutely is the carpaccio. You have no idea how explosive it is to have a tiny scoop of ice cream pop in your mouth against the thinly sliced beef. Bravo to Head Chef Alberto Modena and his admirable sense of adventure! I can imagine a range Bella Cosa Restaurant in London produce high-quality food similar to this.

A little pile of pasta hit me next. I loved how it was presented in different dimensions on tasting plates.Tentazioni Restaurant London Bermondsey

Tagliatelle Fresche all’Uovo “Tentazioni” con Salsa al Tartufo Nero
(Fresh Eggs Tagliatelle “Tentazioni” with Black Truffle Sauce)

The next dishes to dance on my taste buds also were divine.Tentazioni Restaurant London Bermondsey

Astice Grigliato con Millefoglie di Carpaccio di Filetto Servito con Insalatina di
Campo e Mele Granny Smith Fritte
(Grilled Wild Scottish Lobster with Beef Fillet Carpaccio Millefeuille Served with
Garden Salad and Deep Fried Grany Smith Apple)

Risotto ai Funghi Secchi e Fegato Grasso Servito con Quaglia Arrostita al Mirto
(Dried Porcini Mushrooms and Fresh Foie Gras Creamy Risotto Served with Oven
Baked Bone less Quail and Mirth Sauce)

For the grand finale, this chef, who gained working experience in Michelin star restaurants in Rome, teased us with a little ‘pick me up.’ Avid Sunny readers, you know that’s my favourite Italian dessert!

Tiramisù Martini alla Fiamma
(Classic Tiramisú Martini Flambé)

Tentazioni Restaurant London BermondseyIt was bellisima!

Tentazioni gets a ten out of ten for the ability to merge art with fine dining Italian food.

They change the menu every two weeks to offer a ‘creative Italian fare’ and use the highest quality ingredients.

I really enjoyed meeting the staff and can’t say enough about how enthusiastic and personable they are.

Tentazioni works well with vegetarians. The restaurant also has a lunchtime prix fixe option, Mezzogiorno Italiano. This option guarantees two courses delivered in only 30 minutes. You could eat there for a quick business lunch or use the private dining room on the first floor for private parties, corporate or business meetings.

Tentazioni Restaurant is at 2 Mill Street, Bermondsey, London SE1 2BD

What the Five Guys? (A London Review)

Did you know Five Guys originated way back in 1986 in the Washington DC area? Yep. I didn’t know either. In fact, I didn’t really pay much attention to Five Guys until I moved to London.Five Guys Review London

I remember when they showed up in a shopping plaza near me in the States. One morning I was leaving my local Starbucks drive-thru and noticed they were getting ready to open adjacent to it. That’s all I have to say about that. I never went. I didn’t know anyone else who talked about it. The end.

And then one sunny day in January when Mr. Sunny and I were strolling through Covent Garden, I had an absolute hysterical laughing fit! There was a Five Guys on Long Acre, just south of Seven Dials and near Leicester Square station. And the line was wrapped around the building!Five Guys London Review

I can only explain my reaction in these words- WTF?! As in…. What the Five Guys!

‘Were they giving burgers away today?’ I wondered.

Mr. Sunny didn’t understand my reaction. He knew Five Guys in London was an absolute phenomenon.

Seriously?

If you’re an avid Sunny reader, you know I favor Covent Garden. So, for months after that day in January, I walked by this place and was tormented. What the Five Guys was going on there?

There was never a line at a Five Guys in the suburban US. In fact, I thought it was a half notch above McDonald’s and maybe a few steps below TGI Fridays.

I continued to boycott Five Guys. There was no way I was standing in line for an American burger when I used to pass by the practically vacant burger joint every day in the States. Not. Gonna. Happen.

And then I got bullied. After posting how awesome my experience was at Shake Shack, I received a lot of feedback that I should try Five Guys. Mr. Sunny and his friends were some of the biggest offenders. My American expat audience remained indifferent. Geez, I wonder why? 😉

So, you know what I did to end my little protest?

Five Guys USA ExteriorI took my mother to her local Five Guys in the States during my last trip in August. I figured if I was conceding, it wasn’t going to be on foreign territory.

Five Guys in the US:

And, just as I expected, the burger joint was empty.
Five Guys USAWe each ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger. And, we both really, really enjoyed our burgers.
Five Guys USAI liked the numerous signs posted throughout the location that doubled as advertising too.
Five Guys USAFive Guys Review USA The experience was pretty good. Mom and I give it two stateside Thumbs Up!

Five Guys in London:

Next, I communicated to Mr. Sunny that when I returned to London from my holiday, I’d treat him to Five Guys in Covent Garden. I was hopeful, as the sign says above my head, that it would be the best burger I’ve ever eaten in my whole life.

Five Guys London Review

I tried to go when I didn’t think it was busy, but we still had to stand outside for about 5 minutes in a queue. I rolled my eyes the entire time.

The inside was much different from the suburban Five Guys. Packed!
Five Guys London ReviewThe menu is exactly the same. Except, however, the prices are a lot higher in London!Five Guys London ReviewI advised Mr. Sunny to take it easy on the fries because the portions are huge. He was delighted to be able to order a beer. That’s not an option at the location where I was in the States.

Five Guys London ReviewYeah, I know. There’s a lot of irony in the beer being a ‘Brooklyn Lager.’ Anyhow, we both got Bacon Cheeseburgers.
Five Guys London ReviewFive Guys LondonAgain, the quality was exactly the same as my first Five Guys experience.

Of course, the Five Guys in London also has the numerous signs reflecting their praise across the United Kingdom.

So, this brings us to the biggest question… which was better… Five Guys or Shake Shack?

Mr. Sunny and I both throw our votes to Shake Shack. It’s not a landslide. We both agree that the Shake Shack sauce is the winning ingredient in our mini ‘American Burger in London Competition’. And for me as a blogger, I really love how much Shake Shack does on social media, both with interacting with me and what they post.

Five Guys was really, really good. However, I’m still SMH every time I walk by and see a queue. How about you? Do you feel the same about them as I do? Londoners, please explain to me…

What the Five Guys?

Manhattan Grill and a semi-paid bill

Holy beefcakes, Sunny friends! Have you been to Manhattan Grill in Canary Wharf?

It’s no secret the Mr Sunny and I have an open relationship when it comes to our carnivorous loves. Perhaps you’ve read my reviews on Burger and Lobster, Carnaby Burger Co, Shake Shack and Five Guys?

So, when a voucher arrived to our flat for Manhattan Grill, we were both individually sharpening our teeth on the steak house’s online menu.Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfMove over, Dracula! There’s something meaner! American friends, that joke was totally for you. 😉

After my epic day long shopping trip (that post is on its way), Mr. Sunny met me at West India Quay for our date night at Manhattan Grill.

Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfThis is the third time in my life that I’ve been to Canary Wharf. Quite honestly, the first time I lived in London, people rarely ventured from Central London to this area. Well, at least not without a passport. Hahaha!

However, over the years it’s become an international financial Mecca. I find it now to be a blend between lower Manhattan and Toronto.Manhattan Grill Review Canary Wharf

Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfFor this reason, it’s most populated during the week. That was particularly appealing to Mr Sunny and I because we like to enjoy our meat fest at a restaurant with no distractions.Manhattan Grill Review Canary Wharf

Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfWe both had a fairly good idea of our orders, so that didn’t take long. We started with our standard adult beverages, beer and wine. Stella and Rioja.
Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfAs we waited for our starters, we loved watching what arose from the kitchen.
Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfIn fact, after multiple burgers passed under my nose, I ran over to get this sneaky shot of someone’s burger-licious dinner for you.
Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfAnd then our starters arrived.

Mr Sunny and I shared the Seared Black Pearl Scallops and Baked Blue Swimmer Crab Cake.

Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfLike I said, previously, we have an open food relationship. So, this threesome that Mr Sunny and I ordered to join our Mains was not intimidating. It is the Mac ‘n Cheese with Lobster, Manhattan Onion rings, and Fries.Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfWe shoveled these comfort foods in to our mouths as we enjoyed the gorgeous views of Canary Wharf from the restaurant. I enjoyed seeing the trains pass by as the London sun began to set.
Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfManhattan Grill Review Canary WharfManhattan Grill Review Canary WharfThen our steaks arrived.

Here is my fillet from the Creekstone Kansas USDA Black Angus menu. Medium rare, of course.Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfMy thoughts on this ruby red Kansas delight is, ‘Surrender Dorothy!’ It completely defeated me. I finished it, but I was hoping that it would be possible to click my heels three times to get home. It was one of those post-Thanksgiving, ‘I need rolled on to a couch, STAT!’ food coma moments.

Mr. Sunny had the same sensation with his T-bone steak from the Scottish Aberdeen Angus menu.
Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfIn fact, at one point he said, ‘For the love of England, I have to finish this!’

We both tried some deep beef breathing exercises when our plates were cleared. And, we both dreaded the one hour plus journey back home to North London.

At that point, we received a bill for around £28. This really surprised us because we had reviewed the restaurant menu in advance and knew what to order to stay within our voucher allotment.

When we inquired about the charge, we learned that alcohol was not covered in our voucher. We were told it’s listed in the fine print of the Terms and Conditions. I still think Mr. Sunny and I would’ve had two drinks each regardless. However, I think Manhattan Grill could’ve communicated that alcohol wasn’t covered to us when we were seated and gave them the voucher. We did follow the guidelines and tell them we had a voucher when we booked the table.

We actually never received a copy of our food bill. When I asked how much we had actually spent, I was told we had enough for one, maybe two desserts.

Mr. Sunny declined. I, however, accepted the challenge.

As someone who lived in New York for 12 years, I’m not afraid of pushing boundaries. So, I asked that they throw a Manhattan Cheesecake in a take away box for me.
Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfEvery single morsel of food we ate at Manhattan Grill in Canary Wharf was truly fantastic.

When we left, we enjoyed a short walk through the area to soak in the sights of South London.

Mr. Sunny made me giggle when we passed this little area near the docks. As he listened to me yap about having to pay that separate alcohol bill, he had an idea.

‘Sweetheart, take a picture of those two, and call your title your story ‘Meat the Semi-circle of Trust.’Manhattan Grill Review Canary WharfHe’s so funny sometimes. 😉

Absolute Taste- Why I travelled 3 Hours for Cake!

Would you ever travel three hours for a piece of cake? I did the day I went to the Absolute Taste Dome Café. The reason why is probably because of you.

That’s right. And, I’m going to explain why.

As a London blogger I get invited to a lot of events. I wish I could attend them all. It’s just not possible. Some are scheduled the same times as others. Some aren’t a good match for what the Sunny in London readers want to see.

The invitation to the Absolute Taste Dome Café was one of the best I have received. Like a few others you’ve seen me accept (White Mulberries Cafe- A Tale of Twitter Fun), it came through the almighty Twitterverse.Absolute-Taste-Dome-CafeAbsolute-Taste-Dome-Cafe

Apparently, I was the 5,000th follower of the Absolute Taste Twitter account in September. The irony of this is that I also hit 5,000 followers the same week, while I was in Florida. It was a Twitter match from the virtual gods, for sure.

Absolute Taste invited me to celebrate with them over a piece of cake at the Dome Cafe. Here’s the prize…Absolute-Taste-Dome-Cafe

Yes, I travelled 90 minutes one way from North London on several different trains to have this cake. Why?

I knew it would make a damn good story.

If you read Sunny in London often, you see that sometimes I receive complimentary meals and items. It’s not about the free stuff though. It’s about the experience. That’s how I decide where I’ll go and what I cover. Sometimes it doesn’t turn out as I had hoped, but being a blogger means you’re on a constant learning curve.

Visiting the Absolute Taste Dome Café was totally worth it. First, I learned about the Design Centre in Chelsea Harbour, where the Dome Café and Design Café are located.

This is a gorgeous hub for designers in London.

The Dome Café is on the ground floor and is an extremely popular place for these professionals to grab a quick, delicious lunch.

I arrived around 2pm, after most of the lunch hysteria. That also meant I missed great shots of their food. Everything was nearly gone.Absolute-Taste-Dome-CafeAbsolute-Taste-Dome-Cafe

However, the assistant manager Charlie sent me these a few days ago…

Absolute-Taste-Dome-CafeHe is Absolutely Amazing. I enjoyed my red velvet cake at my ‘We are the Twitter Champions Party.’

More importantly, I learned that Charlie is very devoted to making the experience for customers at the two food venues great. I was very impressed when he said that it means the most to him that customers are treated with manners and that both locations have a neat, clean appearance.

We’re going to of course assume that he’s 100% dedicated to quality food as well. 🙂

Facts about Absolute Taste Dome Café:

– Food is baked fresh at the Absolute Taste headquarters each morning and delivered around 10:30am. The fresh pastries usually sell out by 12pm.
– Types of sandwiches rotate on a weekly basis.
– Serving stops at 3pm.
– It’s been located at the Design Centre for about 9 years.

The Absolute Taste Design Café is also located in the Design Centre. It’s a full restaurant for lunch and closes at 5pm. There’s a charming bookstore next to the café that features books for design clientele. Absolute-Taste-Dome-CafeAbsolute-Taste-Dome-Cafe

Facts about Absolute Taste Design Café:

– Because it’s mostly used for business lunches, the alcohol selection is limited. In fact, they usually sell a total of one bottle of wine each day. Further, they just have bottled beer, no draft.
– The menu changes seasonally. The most popular item is the smoked haddock and fish cake hake. The Design Burger is always a hit too.

Absolute-Taste-Dome-CafeBeing a blogger in London means you have a lot of doors opened for you that most people don’t experience. I’m always grateful for these opportunities.

So, I’ll end this feature by saying thank you to Absolute Taste and my 5,000 tweeps. I appreciate being lucky enough to have my cake and Twitter followers too.
