Things to Do in Greenwich London

10 Things to Do in Greenwich London

If you like rich history, stunning views and fun riverside pubs, there are many things to do in Greenwich London that you don’t want to miss.

Greenwich is one of my favourite London areas to visit for the day. And for people who are visiting London and have a tight timeline, it’s a great alternative to a bigger day trip. You’ll find there are far less crowds in this area of London too!

Greenwich offers a mix of activities for tourists and Londoners. Its vast green spaces, naval history and relaxed atmosphere make it a fantastic day out or romantic date idea.

I’ve included a day trip itinerary here too so you aren’t overwhelmed with how to coordinate your day. As an American in London who has been here writing about places to see in London since 2013, a big tip I have is to get a GoCity Pass to save money on your  visit to Greenwich. You can bundle several attractions into one convenient ticket. And who doesn’t love a discount?!

Two River Cruise Options

In the spirit of its rich naval history, start your Greenwich adventure with a scenic boat ride from central London.

For Londoners, you may wish to take The Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. It’s convenient because you can use your Oyster card for payment. For those visiting London, booking a River Cruise with City Cruises, which includes commentary about landmarks along the Thames is fun! I’ve taken them twice while living here. While the script the guides use didn’t change much in the years between the trips, I found it entertaining and informative on both trips.

Arriving by boat sets the tone for a day steeped in maritime charm and offers stunning views along the way.

If you’re pressed for time on a London trip, a river cruise lets you see the sights quickly. It could be a great idea on your first full day so you can familiarise yourself with the locations of London’s iconic landmarks.

Museums and Attractions

Greenwich is the ideal place to immerse yourself in Britain’s naval past. So, you’ll find many of the things to do in Greenwich are focused on this aspect.

Let’s start with the National Maritime Museum. Like nearly all London museums, this is free! Inside you will find exhibits that bring London’s seafaring history to life.

Stroll next door to the Queen’s House. This is an elegant 17th-century building known for its Tulip Stairs and striking art collection. Again, it’s free to enter and a must-see for history fans and those who want that stunning shot for Instagram!

No visit to Greenwich is complete without a trip to the Royal Observatory Greenwich, home to the Prime Meridian and Greenwich Mean Time.

And when you go, make sure to take a photo of yourself standing with one foot in each hemisphere! While the observatory charges for entry, it’s included in the GoCity Pass, so don’t forget this option to save money. Finally, step aboard the Cutty Sark, the world’s last surviving tea clipper. Like the observatory, the GoCity Pass includes this attraction, making it a cost-effective choice. For a truly unique experience, enjoy afternoon tea on the ship.

PARK and a MARKET

For those on a budget, Greenwich has plenty of free activities besides Queen’s House.

Stroll through Greenwich Park, one of London’s oldest Royal Parks, offering breathtaking views of the London skyline.

Pack a picnic or take a leisurely walk to the top of the hill for the ultimate photo opportunity. If you’re a photographer, you will be sorry if you don’t have your camera for photos at this location. While I like to keep it light when I’m out exploring for the day, I do think you’ll be sorry if you don’t have a proper device with you to capture the views here.

Greenwich Market, open seven days a week, is a fun spot to visit also. From artisanal food stalls to handcrafted goods, the market is a vibrant space perfect for grabbing a quick bite.

Things to Do in Greenwich for Thrill Seekers

While Greenwich has a very relaxed vibe, it’s actually cool for those who seek adventure too.

Climb to the top of the O2 Arena for jaw-dropping views of the Thames and Canary Wharf. A big tip for those who have FOMO- book your climb in advance! This is especially important during the summer months. And, if you are seeking something fun to do on a sunny day in London, the sunset climb is perfect!

For a more laid-back perspective, glide across the Thames on the London Cable Cars, which connect Greenwich Peninsula to the Royal Docks. It’s a fun, scenic experience that even Londoners enjoy. Just be sure to go during nice weather and not high winds. That could be scary!

Another exciting idea for things to do in Greenwich is going to Mamma Mia! The Party at The O2. It’s an immersive dining and theatre experience set to the music of ABBA. It was one of my favourite recent activities in London. I’ve reviewed the event, so if you want Advice to the Mamma Mia! The Party in London (including tips on what to wear) read that article. Be sure to book this way ahead also, as it does tend to sell out.
