Christmas Afternoon Tea on a Bus in London

Sunny friends, the Brigit’s Bakery Christmas Afternoon Tea on a Bus in London is the trifecta for London food lovers during the holidays!

This unique bus tour around London could tick all the boxes for a person who loves London, delicious food and Christmas.

Along with 29 other travel bloggers, I was invited to attend a special trip around London for the purpose of previewing the Brigit’s Bakery Christmas Afternoon Tea. For quite some time, I have wanted to take an afternoon tea tour on an iconic Routemaster bus with this company. When they first launched in 2014, I was a bit wary because I am not the most coordinated person. And while you wouldn’t think a lot of agility is needed to eat food, the thought of taking pictures and reviewing it at the same time is intimidating. But the more I saw the variety of tours they offer growing, the more I realised that the idea of a travelling tea was a smashing hit with people in London.

So this is how the experience goes…

Christmas Afternoon Tea on a Bus in London- The Food

This is the first category I want to tell you about because it is the biggest surprise for me. I rate the food 5 stars and this is why…

Not only is everything super tasty, but also it is really fresh. It is always disappointing when you go to a luxury hotel for afternoon tea and are served stale bread. No matter how decadent the pastries are during the last course, that crusty impression from the sandwiches stays with you.

Honestly, I had low expectations of the food going in to this afternoon tea. It didn’t seem probable that food could be prepared and transported on a bus to Victoria Station and maintain it’s original intent for quality and taste. Brigit’s Bakery has masterfully defeated this obstacle.

When we stepped on to the bus, all of the tables were beautifully set. This includes every food item except the basket of scones that we were served about half way through the journey.

To me, that’s a Christmas afternoon tea miracle!

Christmas Afternoon Tea on a Bus in London- The Journey

This is where the experience could get a bit dicey, Sunny friends.

I had a blast on the journey and created a highlight video on my Instagram for you to see more of the experience.

However, there are a few things you need to consider before determining if this experience is for you. Foremost, let’s consider that you will be drinking.

We had complimentary Prosecco and several top ups each. This could be problematic for some people. While they advised us that we could enjoy the Prosecco before the tour started, it came with a disclaimer about the bus not stopping once it got rolling.

Do some quick processing about what that means, Sunny friends.

christmas-afternoon-tea-on-a-bus-in-london-brigits-bakery

Next, there were cupholders at each place setting for guests to put their plastic Prosecco glasses, coffee or tea. They are there for a reason. The ride is bumpy and many times the bus stopped quickly, because that’s normal for busses navigating through London streets. I used a DJI Osmo Mobile Smartphone Gimbal which is on my UK Amazon Gear List (US Amazon readers find it here). I also applied Stabilisation effects while editing the video.

A few bloggers ended up with Prosecco on their lap at different times in the evening. I am not sure if it is because they were busy taking selfies and forgot to put their glasses in their cup holders or were just careless. But, I didn’t have any issue with spilling my drink. And, I had three glasses.

To be honest, since I have lived in London for 6 years and have reviewed nearly every attraction (check my trip planning guides if you are visiting London), I wasn’t that focused on sight seeing during our early evening trip. If this is your primary goal, the combination of afternoon tea and touring London might not be for you. Because the food is so good, you might be distracted away from the London landmarks.

Further, in a moving bus you won’t get the best focused pictures of these iconic locations. This is especially true if you are on the bus at night because you will catch some serious glare from the windows.

However, if you want to say you did something truly unique in London- riding a Routemaster bus while eating the most iconic meal in the UK- this afternoon tea is a must do!

But, if you think the journey would be too shaky, at the very least you can stop by their Covent Garden location. I walk by it all the time and it’s quite popular!

christmas-afternoon-tea-on-a-bus-in-london-brigits-bakery
Brigits-Bakery-afternoon-tea-bus-tour-in-london

Afternoon Tea on a Bus in London- The Length

Another huge bonus of this afternoon tea on a bus in London is the fact that there is a clear end time. Assuming you don’t get stuck in any unusual traffic, you will know when your experience ends.

My biggest ‘negative factor’ with afternoon teas in London is their length. I have been held captive at luxury hotels for nearly three hours for this food experience. After indulging in a carb fest of sandwiches, scones and pastries, I generally feel uncomfortable and lethargic. Americans, when I say I feel like a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade float, you know what I mean!

If I could change anything about the traditional afternoon tea, it would be to speed up the process. So, being on the afternoon tea tour bus with Brigit’s Bakery for 90 minutes was a dream come true for me.

Sir Christopher Wren Hotel- Where to Stay Near Windsor Castle at Christmas

If you really want to treat yourself when visiting Windsor, you need to know a great location for where to stay near Windsor Castle. Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa is beneath the castle and is inches from tons of restaurants, shops and of course- pubs!

Mr Sunny and I love Windsor because it is such a short trip from London and has such a lovely atmosphere. Recently, we made a trip to Windsor just to enjoy all the Christmas decorations. While I think London is breathtaking during the holidays, there are so many things to do in Windsor at Christmas too. That is why having a hotel in a great location matters a lot.

Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa- Check-in

We arrived at the Windsor and Eton Central Railway Station at around 5.30pm. The hotel is about a 7 minute walk away, I think. You see I am not exactly sure because as soon as you leave the station you are dazzled with numerous shops like Molton Brown, Neal’s Yard Remedies and L’Occitane. If the allure of shopping does not misguide you, you still might face another obstacle with Windsor Castle.

Its awe will strike you just as you leave the station heading toward the High Street. I think I stood in front of it for 10 minutes filming the light projection display when we arrived. But, you will have to watch my “Things to Do in Windsor at Christmas’ video to see what I mean.

You literally just wrap around the High Street and Windsor Castle to find the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa.

Staff greeted us quickly and swiftly took us to our room, which was in a building across the road from the main building. They were clear that they wanted our stay to be relaxing and were eager to help with anything.

where-to-stay-near-windsor-castle-at-christmas-sir-christopher-wren

Our room was exactly what we needed for the quick stay- clean, quiet and comfortable. We quickly freshened up and headed to the high street to explore Christmas in Windsor at night.

Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa- Next Time

Unfortunately, with a tight timeline for a press trip, we weren’t able to enjoy more of what the hotel had to offer. Sadly, we just got to sleep and have breakfast. In fact, the images of the spa look gorgeous on the website. Mr Sunny was quite disappointed when he learned the hotel has a whirlpool, because we did not pack his bathing costume for our trip. However, with so many Christmas activities happening in the town, I can’t imagine this would have been the highlight!

The afternoon tea at Sir Christopher Wren is offered in either the Drawing Room or Brasserie. Both seem ideal for a relaxing and indulging in this British tradition.

They had a great offer for January stays while we were there, so Mr Sunny and I are going to continue to follow the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa on Instagram so we don’t miss the chance to skip off to Windsor the next weekend we are free. It is such an easy escape from London in terms of day trips that offer English culture and history.

Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa- Christmas Season

While the hotel is absolutely dreamy for a wedding and is where celebrities stay when in Windsor for a royal wedding, it is also a popular hotel for local residents to book their Christmas parties.

In terms of festivities, there is not a corner of the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa that isn’t sparkling with Christmas joy. I lost count of all the Christmas trees I saw. Holiday decorations are tastefully everywhere.

where-to-stay-near-windsor-castle-at-christmas-sir-christopher-wren

where-to-stay-near-windsor-castle-at-christmas-sir-christopher-wren

This further added to the warmth and lovely atmosphere of the Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa. If you seek a winter getaway that is easy from London or have some extra time to enjoy the English country atmosphere, book a stay here early. It is quite a popular place to go.

Our stay was part of a press trip to the area, but if you want to see all the other great reviews and stars from people who agree, you can visit TripAdvisor to how highly Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa is ranked.

Hogwarts in the Snow- 5 Reasons You MUST Go!

Have you seen Hogwarts in the Snow?

If you love Christmas and you’re a true Harry Potter fan, then you must get to the Warner Bros Studio Tour outside of London during the holiday season!

It officially opened on November 13th. Luckily, I had the chance to visit the very next morning. Since I have already reviewed the London Harry Potter Studio Tour on the blog and also created The Dueling Challenge: Harry Potter London vs Orlando, which compares both attractions, I returned to the London Studio to see the Harry Potter holiday spirit.

My friend and I spent the entire recommended three and a half hours touring the attraction, which is actually about an hour longer than I spent there the first time I went with Mr. Sunny in the summer. She and I just didn’t want to leave!

Hogwarts in the Snow Harry Potter Studio Tour London Christmas Things to Do

For this reason, I recommend that you go online and book your tickets before the festivities end on Sunday, January 31, 2016. There are also five other reasons you must go to see Hogwarts in the Snow…

Hogwarts in the Snow- The Great Hall

When the doors open to The Great Hall, you see all the tables decorated in festive food for the holidays.

Hogwarts in the Snow Harry Potter Studio Tour in London for Christmas The Great HallHogwarts in the Snow Harry Potter Studio Tour in London for Christmas The Great HallThey are the actual items used for the films. In fact, you learn during the tour that they originally tried using real food for scenes, but after several days of filming they realised that the food was a bit foul.

For a few seconds when you’re in The Great Hall, they light the Christmas pudding on fire. I caught a shot of it in the YouTube video you can see below. Yes, the flames are real.

Christmas trees are in nearly every corner of The Great Hall, and the costumes are spirited too.

Hogwarts in the Snow- Seasonal Sets

Once you finish your time in The Great Hall, you are on your own to explore the sets, costumes and special effects areas of the studio. Several of the film sets have also been adorned with holiday cheer.

Hogwarts in the Snow- See Snow

Once you depart through the snow drifts stationed in Diagon Alley, you can enjoy some Butterbeer in the snow.

In the area outside between the two sound stages where you can find the Knight Bus and Harry’s house on Privet Drive, it is snowing.

The YouTube video at the end shows the sneaky secret to what’s actually happening in this outside area.

Hogwarts in the Snow- The Christmas Covered Castle

After your journey through the Creatures area and other special effects departments, you have a chance to see several models used for the film.

And that’s when something else starts to happen.

Moving up this corridor, you start to notice the scent of Evergreen filling the air. The gorgeous Christmas smell intensifies as you move up the ramp. Eventually you reach an outlook area where a stunning view of the giant scale model of Hogwarts that was used for filming shots over the school.

It’s easy to spend a whole half of an hour taking pictures and walking around all the levels of the castle. During this time, you’ll notice the lighting change too. The idea is to show guests of Hogwarts in the Snow a serene scene that takes place from sunrise to sunset.

Once you peel yourself away from the castle, you are directed to a magical wand room. Every actor from the films has a box which keeps his/her wand stored safely.

With that final temptation of being able to leave the muggle world with your own Harry Potter wand, you enter the Gift Shop.

My friend made sure to pick up a Christmas ornament for herself as a keepsake from our fun day. I think Mr. Sunny would like this beer tankard. Don’t you?

I received press passes for my visit, but you can learn more about ordering tickets here. This is a holiday event near London that you just don’t want to miss! Things to Do in Covent Garden- Pet a Reindeer!

Did you know one of the things to do in Covent Garden during Christmas is petting a real, live reindeer?

Yes, Sunny friends, it’s true. Seeing the reindeer has been on my list of one of my top things to do in Covent Garden for the past few years, and I finally had the chance last weekend.

You see, back in 2011 I first learned that it was possible on certain dates to see Santa’s reindeer in Covent Garden. Unfortunately, it’s back when I lived in the US and wasn’t due to visit Mr. Sunny here in London until December 23rd. The reindeer are sent back to the North Pole by then. I assume they need a few days to get ready for their big night.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been in London for the Christmas season since then.

Things to Do in Covent Garden for Christmas- Feed the Reindeer

There’s no doubt you have probably already seen the 22 foot reindeer that made its debut for this year’s Christmas in Covent Garden celebrations. It’s kind of tough to miss from any angle when you head in to the Piazza.

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer! However, it takes a little bit of searching to find Santa’s reindeer. But, isn’t that what you’d expect from such magical creatures?

In fact, the reindeer in Covent Garden only make appearances on festive weekends. So, there’s really just 5-6 opportunities for you to see them each Christmas season. This year, they made their debut appearance on November 8. Although I had hoped to be one of the first people there to see them, I actually didn’t make it until this past weekend.

On a beautiful sunny Saturday in London, I made Mr. Sunny head to Covent Garden with me so I could finally see, and maybe pet, the reindeer.

When what to my wondering eyes did appear…

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

When we arrived, I was totally gutted. It sure wasn’t a ‘miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer’.

I couldn’t believe it. I mean I really thought I knew Dasher and Dancer and Prancer, and especially Vixen! But, instead of their furry, moving faces, I found an entire sleigh and reindeer built from 700,000 colourful Lego bricks!

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!Everyone around me seemed in awe of this gimmick. ‘Take a selfie with a reindeer!’ they said.

Bah humbug, I tell ya’

I was devasted. I told Mr. Sunny there was just no way that my favourite neighborhood in London could let me down, not after having this on my ‘things to do in Covent Garden’ bucket list for so long. So, I started searching through every nook of Covent Garden’s Apple Market. They haaaad to be somewhere!

Finally, I popped around to my favourite restaurant in the area, 21 Covent Garden, and asked someone who looked like he could be one of Santa’s trusty elves standing outside.

He pointed just off to the side and said, ‘There they are!’

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

In a small fenced in area I could see two reindeer surrounded by tons and tons of people waiting to see Santa’s power rangers.

I waited and waited until I could squeeze in through the layers of people so I could actually see the reindeer.

It took about 15 minutes to get in to see them. Oh, and reindeer aren’t the easiest creatures to photograph.

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

We played a lot of reindeer games to get their attention.

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

Then finally Cracker or Tinkerbell looked over at us. You see, that’s apparently the names of the two reindeer that serve as Santa’s back up sleigh pullers.

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

We coerced the reindeer in to coming closer, so I could say hello and fulfill my little Christmas dream.

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

I let Mr. Sunny feed the reindeer with moss while I furiously snapped away on my camera.

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!

It is an opportunity I don’t think you’ll get many places. Well, except the North Pole, I suppose.

This weekend (December 20 and 21) is their last appearance for the 2014 Christmas season. If you’re looking for super fun and free things to do in Covent Garden this holiday season, stop by and see the reindeer.

Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!Things to Do in Covent Garden London, Pet the Reindeer!Be patient and have a well charged camera battery. I took about 50 pictures of these mystical animals. They don’t stand still for long. I guess that’s part of the job responsibilities on Christmas Eve though, if you think about it.

Happy Holidays and make sure you read the ‘Differences between Christmas in the UK and America‘. You better watch out… It’s epic!

The opportunity to view reindeer in Covent Garden is complimentary (AKA free). The complimentary experience does not affect my opinion of the event. I truly believe I actually saw Santa’s reindeer. 🙂

The 10 BEST Things to Do in London at Christmas

What are 10 of the best things to do in London at Christmas? The list of possibilities is quite extensive. After all, Charles Dickens invented Father Christmas, didn’t he? 😉

Ok, ok, that’s a bit big, but really, when you think about the spirit of Christmas and the whole idea of gift giving and the celebration of the event, London is absolutely one of the places in the world that you want to be.

So what are the things to do in London at Christmas that MUST be on your list of activities? Let me show you, Sunny friends…

things to do in london at christmas

Things to Do in London at Christmas: Winter Wonderland

As a girl who grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida and spent tons of time at Disney World, I can safely say that you should ‘Let it Go!’ when it comes to your reservations about Winter Wonderland rides in London at Christmas.

In fact, if you ask me, the rides at Winter Wonderland are more exciting than those at Disney World. Scout’s honour! That’s if you’re interested in being flipped and tipped. It’s my favourite holiday activity, as you’ll see in this video.

Make sure if you are going to Winter Wonderland and want to make it extra special, that you watch this year’s video which outlines all the changes that have happened since the pandemic and what you need to do before you go.

Things to Do in London at Christmas: Ice Skating

Another fun activity that you will find in many festive Northern climate cities during the holidays is ice skating. In London, during the holidays there are many places to slide across the ice (hopefully on your skates and not your bum!).

Things to Do in London at Christmas Ice Skating at Somerset House

You can join the crowds at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland or visit Somerset House. Other options for ice skating in London include: Broadgate Ice Rink, Canary Wharf Ice Rink, Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink, Ice Skating at Wembley Park, Natural History Museum Ice Rink, and the Tower of London Ice Rink.

Things to Do in London at Christmas: Shopping

Of course, there’s the obvious things to do in London at Christmas, which is shopping. To keep it simple, you’ll want to stay focused on the shops on Regent Street, Carnaby Street, and Seven Dials. Make sure you watch out for the shopping nights in these areas because they offer discounts to customers that are really valuable!

I’ll be sure to announce the shopping nights in my newsletter. In fact, I already sent the Seven Dials Christmas Shopping party with 20% discount information to subscribers. To make sure you don’t miss the other ones, subscribe here.

Things to Do in London at Christmas: Afternoon Tea

Who is able to visit London and skip afternoon tea? Not me!

There are many hotels that pride themselves each year on their festive Christmas afternoon teas. This year, you may wish to visit the Conrad St. James Snow Queen Afternoon Tea. It’s offered from November 23 2015- February 11 2016. I had the chance to preview it in October. My review will thoroughly explain why I choose it for this year’s Queen of the Christmas Afternoon Tea!

Although, that afternoon tea is certainly riveled by the One Aldwych Hotel’s long-standing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired afternoon tea, which will be offered at least until the remainder of this year.

Popular Christmas afternoon teas from 2014 include the Corinthia Hotel and the Sofitel St James, who offered the Buche de Noel French inspired tea in honour of the hotel’s French ownership.

Things to Do in London at Christmas: Hogwarts in the Snow

One of the newest iconic things to do in London at Christmas is visiting the Warner Bros Studio Tour. From November 13, 2015 – January 31, 2016 the ‘Hogwarts in the Snow’ tour is offered. Iconic sets are decorated for festive scenes, the Great Hall is lined with trees, and the Hogwarts castle model is covered in a blanket of filmmaking snow.

Things to Do in London at Christmas Harry Potter Studio Tour

Unfortunately, the Christmas dinner in the ‘Great Hall’ for December 3, 2015 is already sold out, Sunny friends. Make sure you read my blog post on what the studio tour involves before heading to Watford, London.

Things to Do in London at Christmas: Charles Dickens Museum

Visiting the Charles Dickens Museum is a great activity any time of the year. Aside from touring the inside of one of Dickens’ homes, the museum has year-round activities for literary lovers. They offer Dickensian Walks, Costumed Tours, and a reading group. You can read my review of the Charles Dickens Museum to learn more about what’s inside for you.

Things to Do in London at Christmas Charles Dickens Museum

Things to Do in London at Christmas: Elf

Just a few streets away from the Charles Dickens Museum is the Dominion Theatre on Tottenham Court Road. From now until January 2, 2016 the show based on the 2003 hit film starring Will Farrell is running in the West End. You can see a trailer of the show here.

Things to Do in London at Christmas: See Santa

Seeing Santa at Christmas is everyone’s dream. There are many places around London this is possible. At Westfield London you can climb aboard Santa’s sleigh for a cinematic adventure. Santa’s Snowflake Grotto this year at Kew Gardens will have dancing lit-up fountains, a choir of holly bushes and a scented fire garden.

Royal Albert Hall has children’s tours with Victorian-themed stories and activities. If you’re a Florida girl like me and sometimes prefer a tropical climate over a snow storm, Santa’s Grotto at the Rain Forest Cafe might be something you consider too.

However, I’m told one of the best experiences for adults and children hoping to see Santa is at Leeds Castle, but that is a bit outside of London.

Things to Do in London at Christmas: IceBar London

If you’re thinking that it’s not appealing to subject yourself to -5° Celsius on purpose when it’s already very cold outside, you obviously haven’t been to the IceBar in London.

Things to Do in London at Christmas IceBar London

Soon after Mr. Sunny proposed to me, we visited the IceBar on a cold night in December. It features a ‘cold sensory experience where the walls, bar, table and even your own personal glass are made from Torne River ice which is harvested from the pristine winter wonderland of Jukkasjärvi in Northern Sweden.’ We also stayed for dinner after enjoying the subzero drinking experience. You can read more about my thoughts on the food and review for the Icebar. Mr. Sunny and I highly recommend it! It’s a great place to meet up with friends or even include on the list of places you’ll visit on your work’s Christmas night out.

Things to Do in London at Christmas: Drink Beer and Mulled Wine

Finally, something the British people do year round is drink. So, the holidays means you can enjoy festive ales at pubs while you’re sitting by the fireplace at your favourite local. You can also experience the traditional autumn/holiday beverage, mulled wine (AKA ‘Viking Blood’).

What are the Christmas differences between the UK and USA

Things to Do in London at Christmas Drink Mulled Wine

Ok, before you panic and feel like I’ve drained all the fun out of Christmas with that last picture, let me clarify that mulled wine is made with a recipe of red wine, various mulling spices and raisins. It’s not a drink for me. The smell is quite strong. However, it seems to be quite popular with everyone else in London at Christmas time.

If you haven’t visited the Sunny in London recommended Pub Crawls yet, make sure you do that too. Mr. Sunny and his father (both life-long Londoners) also recommend The Good Pub Guide 2019.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London

Why do I visit Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London every year? Let’s break it down quickly. I grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida which is 60 miles from Orlando. It’s undeniably the theme park capital of the world. In fact, I worked at Universal Studios for a few years after finishing my internship with NBC News London Bureau, where I met Mr Sunny.

And… I LOVE CHRISTMAS!

So, if you love the theme park atmosphere and Christmas, then the seasonal experience of Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London is for you too.

If you want to literally see how much fun this holiday event is in London, then I have you covered. Mr Sunny and I filmed all the highlights of food, rides and markets and published it on the Sunny News channel.

With last year’s closure due to the pandemic, there is a lot to look forward to in 2021 at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. However, there are some big changes to note as well.

Foremost, you must book your tickets in advance online. I literally booked ours the first day it was possible in early August. I knew to do this because I subscribe to their email. The upcoming changes were clearly communicated in advance, so I had time to consider and research options.

The biggest variable was really the weather.

I know- this is ironic from a blogger who calls herself ‘Sunny in London.’ But, the name was created to distinguish myself when I arrived here in 2013 and to promote a positive vibe.

When you book tickets you must choose one of three entry times: 10am, 1pm and 5pm. No matter what time you enter, you can stay until the event closes that evening. We chose 1pm this year and found it worked really well. It allowed us to both experience Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London both during daylight hours and night.

You do know that it gets dark around 4pm in the winter in London, right?

Since we are equally as excited about food and drink as we are the rides, Mr Sunny and I booked a package at the Bavarian Village. This is because if you spend £20 on any attractions, rides or games online in advance, your entrance ticket is free when booked in the same transaction.

Our total was £33. This is the breakdown.

  • 1 Adult/teen Entry (standard) £5, 1 Adult/teen entry (standard) free
  • Booking fee £3
  • Food package from 10am, Bavarian Village Food package, 2 x Food to Go Bratwurst Deal- Alcoholic Drink £25

If you don’t book any additional items, then entry is free during off-peak periods and costs £5 or £7.50 for peak periods.

Thoughts on Admission to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London

No one ever wants to pay for something that previously was free. However, after we arrived at 1pm on Friday 19th November, we saw the difference it made.

As Mr Sunny commented, ‘This is far more civilised.’ And I agree completely.

Since you can’t just rock up to the gate, it eliminates a lot of last minute visitors. It also seemed to cut down on the amount of pick pockets.

Personally, I would happily pay this entry charge with the option of having it waived by spending a certain amount. Being able to walk through easily from the Christmas market booths to the food stalls to the rides was a refreshing change.

What do you think? Leave me your ideas in the comments.

Food at Hyde Park in Winter Wonderland in London

Christmas market food always has a special place in my heart. Maybe I should say stomach?

We traditionally enjoy Bratwurst sausage and crepes when we visit Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London. This year had a delicious little twist after we solved the mystery of how to use our pre-paid vouchers.

No one working at the food stalls in the Bavarian Village seemed to know what to do with them. Eventually we discovered that they could only be ‘cashed in’ at one location. Once we got our Bratwurst, we received two drink tokens. You can see Mr Sunny’s Bratwurst and mountain of sauerkraut in the above YouTube video.

I opted to skip a crepe this year because during the pandemic we purchased quite a bit of Le Creuset baking pans and cookware. This included a ginormous crepe pan, so we make them often at home now. (If you have any tips on how to perfect one- I would be grateful if you left them in the comments.)

Instead, later in the evening we chose to check out the Street Food Festival that’s been added to Winter Wonderland. This proved to be a great move. I had a fab Mexican themed scoop of mac and cheese from the Mac Factory.

hyde-park-winter-wonderland-in-london-advice

Some of the food companies you will find there are: Halal Guys, Doughlads, Meltsmiths, El Pollote, Freewheelin’ Pizza, Truffle, STAKEhaus, E8Fish and Oh My Dog! The big star seems to be EL&N cafe.

Thoughts on Food at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London

It’s fair food. Pun intended.

Expect food that’s kind of warm but not hot and sitting outside all day. You know you will pay a lot more than what it is actually worth but that’s part of the experience at a theme park, isn’t it?

However, as indicated, the Street Food Festival really is a nice addition this year. And since there is staggered admission that’s no longer free, there was plenty of space to sit and enjoy our food while we were there.

But- if you’re a bit OCD like me, you’ll want to make sure you have hand sanitiser and wipes with you at all times. It didn’t look like the benches and tables were being wiped off as quickly as I would have hoped.

hyde-park-winter-wonderland-in-london-advice-street-food-festival

Drinks at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London

Mr Sunny skipped his annual Stein at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland this year. But, we did make our yearly pilgrimage to the Carousel Bar, Santa’s Pub and our favourite- Thor’s Tipi. It is very ironic, but we found the most ‘chill’ atmosphere in the later which features a warm, cosy environment with tons of mulled wine, hot chocolate and Prosecco.

Worthy of a special mention is Bar Ice. It’s billed as the ‘coolest’ bar at Winter Wonderland and as an insta-worthy haven. We opted to skip it because twice we had been to the Ice Bar in London. Sadly, this bar on Heddon Street closed during the pandemic.

If you’ve never done anything like it- I would highly suggest booking a session during your Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London visit. Bar Ice sessions are 20 minutes long, just like they were at the venue Mr Sunny and I experienced. While you might think the -10°C would be unbearable, the gear they give you makes it easy to enjoy your plunge.

Thoughts on Food at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London

Keep an eye on your bank card when you go to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. Those drinks, no matter what location you hit, add up really fast the next day when you aren’t using cash.

Rides at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London

I am most critical of this area of Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London. When you grow up visiting the world’s most perfect theme park experience (Walt Disney World), it’s tough to have any other place measure up to your normal.

For this reason, I hesitate to go on too many rides at temporary amusement parks. While I am sure they undergo rigorous inspections when being built, I just don’t have too much faith in their structure.

Plus, you will pay a HEFTY price for a ride at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London.

A simply must-do is The Giant Wheel. We rode this with a VIP champagne package the year we got engaged. Unfortunately, it was a windy and cloudy evening so my lack of faith in rides mentioned above created a terror in me that did interfere with the ability to enjoy the ride.

However, I’ve seen a lot of people’s photos from The Giant Wheel this year and it looks like on a clear night, the views of Hyde Park and surrounding London area are incredible. This ride also had the longest line later in the evening. But, they do offer Fast Track passes.

While initially criticising the astronomical price of the Munich Looping ride, we did splurge for it at the end of our visit. It’s a famous ride popular from Oktoberfest and is the world’s largest transportable roller coaster.

Aside from these two rides, everything else you find is conventional fun fair attractions.

Thoughts on Rides at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London

This is where you will spend the most money fast. In fact, just a few rides will put you over the ticket price for a full day at Universal Studios Orlando or the Disney theme parks. Choose your adventures carefully!

Every year I have been curious about the Haunted Mansion. Again, this can be attributed to the one I knew and loved at Walt Disney World.

This year I finally ticked it off my bucket list, and it was a complete waste of money. Without a doubt- skip the Haunted Mansion at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London.

Final Thoughts

To get the most out of your experience at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London, we absolutely suggest the 1pm time to book your tickets. Figure the visit will cost around £150 if you want to have two snacks each, a few drinks and 4-5 rides.

I didn’t even get to the Christmas markets in this article feature. That would certainly add more to your trip.

What do you think, Sunny friends? Is a visit to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland in London on your horizon this year?

The BEST Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas

How do you decide where to go ice skating in London for Christmas?

If you aren’t from London and are visiting for the holidays, it can be very hard to decide what to do when you visit this fabulous town.

That’s why this year I went to all the places I think are the best locations for ice skating in London and have them here for you!

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Natural History Museum

Ice Skating in London: Tower of London

One of the last to open during the Christmas season, the Tower of London could be considered the most dangerous place to go ice skating in London.

Ok, ok, that’s just a silly joke because this location is historically a place of torture.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Tower of London

As you can see, it’s a very large rink, and the surrounding views are stunning. Not only can skaters whiz by the Tower of London every time they circle the rink, but also they can see the Mayor of London’s office, the Gherkin and The Shard. This year the Tower of London Ice Rink is open until January 3, 2016.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Tower of London

There is a cafe located nearby called The PieMan, so if you work up an appetite you can grab food too.

Ice Skating in London: Somerset House Ice Rink

In my Periscope broadcast of Somerset House Ice Rink, I called it the ‘most fashionable’ place to go ice skating in London. This is because the location hosted Fashion Week from 2009 up until February 2015.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Somerset House

During the day, people skating around the rink can see the stunning Somerset House courtyard and the beautiful Fortnum and Mason sponsored Christmas tree. It’s also right near Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery so if you’re just in London for the day, it’s easy to pair it with other fun, free things to do in London.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Somerset House

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Somerset HouseIn the evening, this rink hosts ‘Club Nights’, which are said to be some of the best international clubs and festivals. The Skate Lounge offers cocktails and hot chocolate, and there is a Skate School and a Polar Cub Club for kids.

Ice Skating in London: Eyeskate Ice Rink

While the rink at the London Eye is certainly the smallest of all the ones listed on the blog, it’s by far the most breathtaking at night.

It’s the centerpiece of ‘Frostival’ in the Southbank Centre are of London for Christmas.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas EyeSkate The London Eye FrostivalFor this reason, I would suggest making sure you give yourself enough time to enjoy all the surrounding festivities when you visit.

Eyeskate closes January 3, 2016.

Since I am super scared of ice skating myself, I suggest that if you’re going to visit Eyeskate either to actually skate or to take stunning pictures, that you also visit Bump. It’s only a minute or two walk from the London Eye, and it’s for four-wheelers. 😉

Ice Skating in London: Ski Zilertall Ice Rink

Everyone in London looks forward to Winter Wonderland, so it stands to reason that this ice rink is probably the ‘most popular’ during the holiday season. Of all the ice skating in London rinks, this one is certainly the most stereotypical of the ‘London attraction’ experience.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Winter Wonderland Hyde Park Zillertal

They have professional photographers who can take souvenir photos for you, and it’s super crowded during peak times. I suggest this location for thrill-seekers because there are also so many amusement rides at Winter Wonderland. If you aren’t going to pair your evening with those activities and a trip to the Bavarian Village, you probably want to consider another rink.

Ice skating sessions here last 50 minutes like nearly all the other rinks. Guests must arrive 20 minutes prior to their booking time. Winter Wonderland ends January 3, 2016.

Ice Skating in London: Swarovski Ice Rink

This ice skating location sits with a fabulous backdrop of the Natural History Museum. It’s very convenient from the South Kensington Underground Station, as you walk underground following the ‘Museum’ signs until you arrive at the rink.

The Café Bar has a bird’s-eye view of the rink and is open daily until the Ice Rink closes. It has a range of tea, coffee, hot chocolate, mulled wine, a variety of wines, beers and soft drinks. Other special offers are the Cream Tea Skate and Champagne Skate

Given its outside the Natural History Museum, I vote this location as the best for families and children because you can pair it with a free museum.

The Swarovski Rink at the Natural History Museum closes January 3, 2016.

Ice Skating in London: Ice Rink Canary Wharf

This is the only ice rink on this list that is not in Central London.  It’s in the heart of Canary Wharf and is just a few minutes walk from both the Canary Wharf Underground and DLR stations.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Canary Wharf

It’s billed as ‘London’s 5 Star Ice Rink.’ Canary Wharf has London’s only skate path, which is a ‘glittering trail of fairy-lit trees beneath Canary Wharf’s soaring towers’. I agree. It’s the most luxurious experience of all the ones listed on the blog.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Canary Wharf

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Canary WharfAttached to the rink is a fantastic outdoor viewing terrace where people can sit and watch the skaters. Also part of this rink is The Tasting Room.

5 Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas Canary Wharf It has sharing menus, sandwiches, and cheese fondue. The venue offers winter cocktails, wines, draught and craft beers and is available for private parties.

For the 2015 holiday season, Ice Rink Canary Wharf is open until February 27.

Personally, I wouldn’t mix my drinks with ice, but if you think you can handle them both, please tag me in your video on Instagram!

Best Places for Ice Skating in London for Christmas

Before you book your tickets online (as most of the locations require that), check to see how far in advance you must arrive before your session.  One does suggest 40 minutes. Some of their prices fluctuate based on peak times.

So, those are the Sunny in London blog picks for the best places for ice skating in London for Christmas. Where do you recommend? Have you been to these ice rinks? Or, are you like me and you prefer to leave your skates safely here and watch all the other brave individuals…

Advice for Visiting a London Christmas Market

If you love Christmas, then visiting a London Christmas market should be at the top of your list during the holiday season. As an American living in London for six years married to a born and bred Londoner, there are some things I have learned after visiting Christmas markets here every season that I think you should know.

advice-visiting-london-Christmas-Market

London Christmas Market Advice- Book Ahead

The biggest thrills are at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland every year. However, a lot of the super fun stuff requires booking in advance. For example, if you want to experience ice skating, Bar Hütte Karaoke, Ice Sculpting Workshops, Bar Ice, Zippos Christmas Circus, Cirque Berserk, Winter Wonderland Comedy Club, or The Giant Wheel, you need to visit their official Winter Wonderland website and get your tickets early!

So, before you check out a Christmas market in London, see what there is to do nearby that might interest you too.

London Christmas Market Advice- Arrive Early

From my experience going to the Christmas Market at Southbank, Trafalgar Square Christmas Markets, Leicester Square Christmas Markets, and others, arriving early means you won’t be getting smashed in to the crowds. Once I went to Winter Wonderland Christmas market on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning and up until 12:30pm I felt like I had all of Hyde Park to myself. Well, maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. But, I had tons of space to take photos and videos, plus there were no lines for food, drinks and festive things to buy.

If you arrive on a weekend night, you could experience some very big crowds. In fact, at times they might limit people entering the more popular Christmas markets due to overcrowding.

So, if you are in London for a long holiday weekend, I would plan to hit the markets in the morning and early afternoon. Then, see a show in the evening instead.

London Christmas Market Advice- What to Wear

While you focus is on festivities, you want to look good too. Decorative Christmas jumpers (sweaters for American readers) are popular, but I prefer to celebrate the holidays with clothes that are chic and sophisticated but still comfortable. Further, Mr Sunny and I try to wear coloured caps so when Mr Sunny relaxes with a beer and I wander off to take photos and video- we can find each other faster.

Below are a few selections I like from Gant. It’s a brand that is making a huge effort for sustainability. If you’ve been in London any time over the past year, you know that it’s been a big movement here.

advice-visiting-london-Christmas-Market

The featured items are from left to right:

  • Stretch Cotton Cable Crew Sweater
  • Ladies Message Crew Sweater
  • Men’s Holiday Stripe Crew Sweater
  • Quilted Windcheater
  • Men’s Weekend Vest
  • Light Down Gilet

And don’t forget to wear comfortable boots or shoes too. You might want to keep in mind that like any city, it does rain in London. This means it could get a bit muddy at the markets. Don’t wear shoes that can’t take a little wear and tear.

London Christmas Market Advice- Saving

While all of the Christmas markets are fun, you will find that the basic activities are the same at each one. In fact, a lot of the same food and drink stands are at each market. For example, you will find a mini-pancake stall, a sausage stall, and stalls that sell mulled wine or hot chocolate. If you’re like Mr Sunny, you will probably seek a place that sells Steins. A few weeks prior to Christmas you want to eat healthy so you can indulge in all of the holiday treats.

advice-visiting-london-Christmas-Market
advice-visiting-london-Christmas-Market

You will want to save some money too because there will also be specialty retail stalls that have Christmas decorations or London themed souvenirs. Build in time to survey them if you are looking for something special to remember your visit to London or just the trip to a London Christmas market. Also, tickets to rides at Winter Wonderland can add up really fast, so budgeting for this ahead of time will help.

London Christmas Market Advice- Final Thoughts

By researching activities you want to do and booking them in advance, planning around crowded times, dressing comfortably, and saving calories and money before you go, you will better position yourself to be in the holiday spirit at a London Christmas market.

What’s your favourite London Christmas market to visit, Sunny friends? What questions do you have about going to one this year?

5 Tips for How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat

As an expat living in London, sometimes it is tough celebrating the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ when you’re in a foreign place. That’s why I have written a list of strategies for how to survive the holidays as an expat.

You’re not going to find all the answers to every problem expats encounter during the holidays here. However, I will list five strategies for you that have worked for me to make the holidays spirited and happy in another country.

Maybe these tips will help you, and hopefully you can add some more. I feel it helps expats to share ideas either in

5 Tips for How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat

1. How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat: Embrace the Place

You wouldn’t have left your home country if you weren’t adventurous and excited about other cultures and traveling. Remember that during the holidays.

Embrace all that your new location has to offer. For example, this year for the holidays in London I’ve decided to spend several days a week in November and December seeing sights and doing activities that I could never experience in Florida.

In October I researched when all the neighborhoods and streets I love were turning on their Christmas lights and having launch parties to celebrate the event. I tried to get to each one on the day it happened or soon after.

Next, I focused on ice skating. There’s no way I’m going to step on to the ice myself. However, ice skating seems like a fun (and definitely romantic) holiday activity. Seeing people enjoy it is very exciting to me.

5 Tips for How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat

In my home state of Florida, there are no outdoor ice skating rinks, even in December.

My research lead me to several other things to do in London for Christmas that I didn’t know about (including the Hogwarts in the Snow Harry Potter Studio Tour). Many of the activities I found are free too!

2. How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat: Get Up and MeetUp

I’ve always been keen to gather expats together for social events. Most recently I organized a fun, casual dinner for 7 American expats I’ve met as a London blogger.

We agreed to leave the cameras outside and met at Dirty Bones in Kingly Court of Carnaby in London last week.

5 Tips for How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat

During our evening, we talked about being married to British men, UK Schools vs American, benefits of acquiring UK citizenship, and confusing things British people say and do. BTW American friends from dinner, I still can’t figure out the different interpretations you suggested for closing an email to a British person… ‘Kind regards’?

If aren’t a blogger and haven’t connected with people through that pathway, you should investigate Internations. I’ve attended a few of their events and definitely recommend it to expats in large cities all over the world.

You might find it’s more for single people, but if you’re an expat living on your own in another country this will likely be your target audience for friends, so give it a go!

3. How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat: Get Crackin’

It helps to learn about your new culture as quickly as possible. While you’re making friends from international backgrounds, don’t forget to integrate the new ideas of your resident country. Learn about how people celebrate Christmas or other holidays in this town and see if you would like to adopt any of these activities as new traditions.

In England, I’ve become quite intrigued with Christmas Crackers, even though at first I thought they were really silly.

4. How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat: Make and Bake

After three long years of waiting for all my personal belongings to arrive in London, I will finally reunite with the contents of my townhouse in the US in mid-January 2016. I’ll write a blog post about the international shipping process later, as well as a review of the international shipping company I am using. I’ll include why I’ve waited three years to send all of my items in these blog posts too.

When my 45+ boxes arrive in London, I will finally have all my baking pans and dishes that I used faithfully every year in America before I moved to London.

This means next year I will be baking all my favourite Italian Christmas cookie recipes for my husband (Mr. Sunny), his family, my friends, and all his work mates.

If you like to bake and cook, this is a great way to make the holidays special no matter where you are. Yes, you’ll have to struggle a bit to find all the ingredients to which you are accustom, but along the way you may learn about some new ones that might spice up your life too!

Now, I just have to hope that all my roasting pans and cookie sheets fit inside my tiny London oven!

5. How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat: Find Your Flicks

When I’m not out exploring London’s Christmas events and I want to avoid the holiday crowds, I watch Christmas movies from America in my flat so I can be in the holiday spirit.

Christmas Differences Between the US and UK

Unlike in America, Christmas specials and movies aren’t on often in London, so I have purchased many American Christmas Movies through Amazon UK. I lost count how many times last year Mr. Sunny watched Fred Claus with me. It’s my favourite.

How to Survive the Holidays as an Expat: Final Thoughts?

Sunny friends, those are a few tips that work for me during the holidays living as an American expat in London. Since I really do believe that it helps to make virtual friends in the expat community, I’d love it for you to leave your strategies below.

Please make sure to include where you are from and where you are living. I look forward to everything you will share!

You can find more of the blog’s Christmas features here. There are also many posts on Expat Life too, plus one that includes an international shipping discount. If you’re interested in a weekly newsletter about London and don’t want to miss any Sunny news, you can subscribe here.
Happy Holidays!

Chi Kitchen Christmas Menu

Guess who’s back? Yep. Mr. Sunny and I hit Oxford Street and Regent Street to see the 2016 Christmas lights and made sure to visit Chi Kitchen again to absorb the new Christmas menu.

We reviewed the restaurant recently, and if you have been watching my tweets, you know I suggest that it is the place to visit during Christmas if you need a food and shopping stop combined in to one, as it is inside Debenham’s department store. Our experience was great. For general ambiance information, you can read about in my previous review. To summarise, it’s easy to find, and of course, in a spectacular location for Christmas shoppers.

When it comes to the food, we feel it is great for the value. The Pan-Asian twist on Christmas caught our attention. First to hit our table is the Chilli Prawns, Sweet Potato and Turkey Sliders.

chi-kitchen-christmas-menu-2016

I quickly munched down all the sweet potato fries and gave Mr. Sunny the spicy opportunity to devour the chilli prawns. We both were a bit puzzled about the turkey sliders because they seem a bit unnatural for a pan-Asian menu. While they are good, the real show stealer is the blueberry mayo you see in the center. Wow- I never would’ve thought of combining these ingredients.

chi-kitchen-christmas-menu-2016

For the Main course, we enjoyed the Grilled Turkey with a Kalamsansi Sauce, Choo Cher Prawns, and Yuzu Salmon.

It is accompanied by a lovely side of Egg friend rice with snow peas.

For dessert, the Chi Kitchen Christmas Menu includes a Walnut Chocolate Brownie with Clotted Cream and Custard. We enjoyed this but felt a bigger dollop of clotted cream would work well.

chi-kitchen-christmas-menu-2016If you’ve watched my Afternoon Tea Etiquette Guide for London, you know why.

Chi Kitchen Christmas Menu- Final Thoughts

The ambiance, food quality and price definitely work. This menu will be offered from 21st November through December and is £28 per person.

Chi Kitchen opens for breakfast and serves delicious pan-Asian food throughout the day. The Group Consultant Chef is Ping Coombes, who is the 2014 Master Chef winner.

We had the opportunity to see Angela, the Restaurant Supervisor on both visits and commend her for guaranteeing excellent service too.
