The Ultimate Free London Itinerary: A Walking Tour for Day 1

Planning London Doesn’t Have to Be Overwhelming.

London is incredible. But planning a London itinerary, especially the crucial first day, can feel like a full-time job.

Should you book that major London attraction ticket? Which direction should you walk? Is it even possible to see the iconic sights without spending a fortune? How much can you handle with jetlag from a transatlantic flight?

As a London travel expert and consultant, I know the anxiety that comes with maximising your time and budget. That is why I have designed the perfect solution: The Ultimate Free London Itinerary Walking Route for Day 1.

Stop 1-3: Start at the Heart of London’s Grandeur

Trafalgar Square

  • The Vibe: This is arguably the single most “Londony” place you can be. It links directly to the Mall (the ceremonial route for the Royal Family that you see on TV), the National Gallery (a large, iconic building) and sits on the edge of the famous Piccadilly Circus.
  • Expert Insight: I recommend to all my trip consultation clients that this is the BEST area to book a hotel for maximum convenience. But be prepared to pay a premium for the excellent location. It is also minutes from dozens of West End theatres and excellent dining. For more guidance, see my article: Travel Tips for Choosing a Hotel When Visiting London.

2. The National Gallery

  • The Vibe: Home to masterpieces by artists like Van Gogh, Da Vinci and Turner. It is free to enter the main collection. This is a perfect, low-commitment culture hit: you can pop in for 30 minutes to see a specific wing or simply admire the impressive facade.
  • Note on Entry: While the main collection is free, entry is managed. While they do have a walk-up line, you should expect to queue. Booking a free timed entry slot in advance is always advised to minimise waiting. (See my guide on essential pre-planning: What You Must Plan in Advance for a London Trip).

3. The Walk Down The Mall (to Buckingham Palace)

  • The Vibe: This grand, tree-lined avenue is the ceremonial route leading directly to the palace. It is an essential, beautiful walk, a perfect way to stretch your legs and shake off travel stiffness.

Hotels

If you haven’t booked your hotel yet for your London trip, here’s an interactive map to get you started! It’s based on the most central location in town.

Stop 4-6: Monarchy, Parliament and the River Crossing

4. Buckingham Palace (Exterior View)

  • The Vibe: A mandatory photo stop.
  • Important Advisory: The interior tours only take place for a limited period during the summer months. If you do not want to spend time dealing with the large crowds, delays and potential last-minute cancellations due to rain, you should simply enjoy the majestic exterior and save your energy rather than waiting for the Changing of the Guard ceremony. And note, that formal ceremony with all the pomp and circumstance you see on tv doesn’t happen every day of the week. So be sure you know when to go!

5. St. James’s Park and Birdcage Walk

  • The Vibe: Walk up Birdcage Walk, passing St. James’s Park. This provides a refreshing green break between the Royal and Parliamentary zones.

6. Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament

The Vibe: The historic heart of the UK’s democracy. You will see the exterior of the Abbey (a site of Coronations and Royal Weddings) and the newly refurbished Elizabeth Tower (home to Big Ben) and the Houses of Parliament.

Stop 7-8: Westminster Bridge and the South Bank Finish

7. Cross Westminster Bridge

  • The Vibe: The most rewarding view of the Houses of Parliament, the river and the city skyline.
  • Local Tip: The river is the River Thames, pronounced “Tems,” which rhymes with “gems.”
  • Security Advisory: While crossing, pay particular attention to your mobile phone and personal items. Pickpockets often operate on and around the bridge, sometimes disguised as performing artists or tourists.

8. The South Bank Walk and London Eye

Dinner Tip: The South Bank offers many excellent dining options. Our favourite, the Anchor (Bankside), offers great views and has a busy atmosphere, especially on a sunny day.

The Vibe: A fantastic, high-buzz, riverside walk. If you are not planning on actually riding the London Eye, then a walk past it is enough to get incredible photos.

Photo Tip: This location is perfect around twilight. You can potentially get beautiful photos of the London Eye in both the Golden Hour and at night, offering a dramatic end to this free London itinerary walking tour.
