Neal’s Yard: London’s Hidden Colourful Courtyard

Tucked away as a hidden gem in Covent Garden, Neal’s Yard is a small but striking courtyard filled with brightly painted buildings and independent cafés. The deep blues, oranges and greens of the shopfronts make it one of the most photogenic places to visit in London.

Neal’s Yard holds a special place in my heart because Covent Garden was the first neighbourhood I lived in when I moved to London. Even after all these years, I still find myself returning often to appreciate the colourful vibe and oasis from the Piazza’s crowds.

  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning for fewer crowds and softer lighting.
  • What to Do: Grab a coffee and breakfast sandwich from 26 Grains, browse Neal’s Yard Remedies for organic beauty products and soak in the relaxed, bohemian vibe.

St Katharine’s Docks: A Secret Gem by the Thames

Just a short walk from Tower Bridge, St Katharine’s Docks is a colourful marina that often goes unnoticed by tourists. The brightly painted boats contrast beautifully against the historic brick buildings, making this a fantastic spot for a scenic stroll.

For tips on visiting the Tower of London and what to do nearby, read Things to Do Near Tower of London too.

  • Why Visit? It’s one of the quieter places to visit in London, perfect for escaping the crowds surrounding the Tower of London.
  • Must-See: The Dickens Inn, a 17th-century pub covered in cascading flowers.
  • Insider Tip: Visit during golden hour for gorgeous reflections on the water.

private tour with a beefeater

One of the BEST tours I have ever taken in London was on the 5th time I visited the Tower of London. With your general admission ticket, you can take a free tour with a Beefeater. However, during peak times there could be 120+ people crowding around the tour giver. Instead, read about how you can beat the crowds, get a picture and enjoy special access to areas with a Private Tour of the Tower of London with a Beefeater.

Belgravia: London’s Most Elegant Streets

For soft, pastel hues and elegant streetscapes, head to Belgravia. Streets like Elizabeth Street are lined with pastel-coloured houses, boutique florists and charming cafés.

  • Photo Spot: Peggy Porschen’s pink bakery is an Instagram favourite. It’s a bit cliche to me. But over the years, every time I visit, there are several girls outside taking selfies and quite a few with their own photographers.
  • When to Visit: Spring is ideal, especially during Belgravia in Bloom, when the entire area is decorated with floral displays.
  • Extra Tip: Belgravia is also home to some of London’s best fine dining restaurants, perfect for a fancy treat after exploring! And, if you have some time, pop in to Eccelston Yards for an extra hidden gem.
