Tips for Visiting London Pubs: What Smart Travellers Must Know

Planning to visit London pubs and not sure how it all works? Whether you’re dreaming of sipping a pint in a historic pub or curious about your first Sunday roast, the British pub scene is a rite of passage but it has its quirks.

From ordering etiquette to knowing who can drink to understanding the mysterious art of the “round,” having these insider tips will help you blend in without missing a beat (or a beer).

As an American living in London, married to a born-and-bred Londoner who jokes he was christened in a pub (not entirely untrue), I’ve lived these differences first-hand. Luckily, I’ve had my English husband to help me avoid being embarrassed or confused!

So, to help you have the best experience on your London trip, we’ve put together these British pub travel tips.

Pubs are central to British culture but they’re not like American bars. You don’t need a degree in etiquette from Oxford to enjoy them. But knowing a few basics will help you avoid awkward mistakes and enjoy the full experience like a Londoner.

Whether you’re popping into a historic neighbourhood pub for a pint or booking a gastropub table for dinner, these tips for visiting London pubs will help you feel confident, avoid missteps and enjoy a more authentic local experience.

1. How to Order in London Pubs

In most London pubs, there is no table service. You’ll need to go to the bar, place your order and pay right away. Don’t expect anyone to come over and take your drink or food order. And some London pubs don’t even take cash.

Legit- a pub near Battersea Power Station once refused my money and I nearly walked out! So, have a credit card or contactless payment card on hand.

At busy times, it might feel a bit like organised chaos but there’s usually an unspoken queue at the bar. Make eye contact with the bartender when you’re next and they’ll serve you in turn.

One important tip: British people typically say, “May I please have a pint of…” rather than the American “Can I do a…” which can come across as abrupt. A little politeness goes a long way here. So, in this instance I encourage you to speak British English. But- not with an attempted accent!

This ordering style will show the people in the pub around you and behind the bar that you are a smart traveller.

2. What to Expect from London Pub Culture

London pubs aren’t just places to drink, they’re community hubs or ‘public houses’. It’s common to see grandparents, kids and dogs enjoying the scene, especially on weekends.

Most locals visit their favourite pub on Christmas Day for a celebratory drink and a chat with neighbours.

The legal drinking age is 18. And if you look under 25, bring ID. Those aged 16 or 17 can drink beer, wine or cider with a meal and an accompanying adult- but they can’t buy it themselves.

By understanding these rules and rituals of the pub, you’ll experience it like a local, not a tourist awkwardly hovering near the door.

3. Understand the Ritual of Buying Rounds

When you’re with a group in a London pub, it’s customary to buy rounds. Each person takes a turn buying drinks for the entire group. It’s an unspoken social contract and skipping your round is a big deal. People might not say anything but they will notice!

Don’t worry, you don’t need to memorise everyone’s drink order like a seasoned bartender. Just ask what they’d like when it’s your turn and be prepared to return the favour if someone treats you first.

4. Tipping in London Pubs

Tipping is not expected in most London pubs, especially if you’re ordering at the bar. If service was truly exceptional, you might leave a small tip or offer to “buy the bartender a drink.” In practice, they’ll just add the cost of a drink to your bill as a thank-you.

If you’re eating in a gastropub with table service, tipping 12.5% is appreciated but not required. Check your bill when you receive it to see if it’s already been added.

5. Finding a Table and When to Wait

In traditional pubs, seating is first-come, first-served. If you see an empty table, go for it. During peak hours, it’s completely normal to share space with strangers. Just ask, “Is this seat free?”. You might even want to be really British and say, ‘Sorry. Is this seat free?’

Again, don’t try to do the accent! I want you to understand the culture, not be silly.

However, in gastropubs (pubs that focus on food first and drinks second), you may need to wait to be seated or book a table in advance. Don’t assume you can simply grab any empty spot. If in doubt, check in with staff when you arrive.

6. What to Drink and Eat in London Pubs

From craft ales to classic ciders, London pubs offer an impressive range of drinks. Don’t feel pressured to order alcohol. Soft drinks and alcohol-free options are perfectly normal. But don’t expect a long cocktail list. Most pubs stick to the basics. Drinks with vodka aren’t super popular either. You’re better off with gin.

Gastropubs, on the other hand, have raised the bar when it comes to food. They often use seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, with menus that change frequently. You might still find classics like fish and chips or steak and ale pie, but the quality is generally far beyond “pub grub.”

7. Closing Times and Last Orders

Most London pubs close around 11 pm, though this varies by area and day. “Last orders” are called about 15–30 minutes before closing. That’s your final warning. Once the bell rings, the bar is done serving.

Unlike in the US, there’s no lingering after hours. Staff will begin clearing tables and gently ushering guests out. Plan your exit accordingly.

8. Explore More with Local Food Tours

If you want to dive deeper into London’s pub and food scene, there are excellent local tours that include stops at historic pubs, food markets and neighbourhood hidden gems.
